Convince me not to remove my Poly motor mounts!

668 Views 13 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  Silver Jetta 1.8T
I've only had them in for 2 days but the vibration when taking off from a standstill is unbearable. I know everyone says to give them 2 weeks but I don't know if I can last. They're the Autotech bushings and I love the responsiveness, just not the extreme vibration. Does it get that much better or does one just get used to it? It feels like it's going to rattle my car to pieces!

My experience with the ABD bushings (and I'm convinced that they're all made in the same factory anyway) was that they were bad at first, and then they got a little better but not much. With my exhaust it's pretty annoying.
I'm going to experiment with using only one of them so see if I can reduce vibration but maintain that solid, no engine rocking feeling.

How cold is it in Alberta right now? It will make a difference once the weather warms up. I hated mine (Energy Suspension) for the first two weeks but, now it doesn't phaze me at all. They are really a lot stiffer in the cold.
Mine did not vibrate violently though, maybe yours are even stiffer than mine?
Did you install both pieces or just the rear (larger) piece. I have only the rear piece in. I have heard that can make a big difference.

Re: Convince me not to remove my Poly motor mounts! (little p)

Its right at the freezing mark right now. Not all that bad considering it gets 30 degrees celcius colder. I've got both inserts in but like I said, only for two days. I don't mind the extra noise and I don't even notice it at idle. It's only when I'm letting the clutch out to take off that I get very bad interior vibration. (dash etc.) Is this what will improve with time or should I try only one of the mounts? If so how do you decide which half to use and do you even benefit at that point?
Re: Convince me not to remove my Poly motor mounts! (Silver Jetta 1.8T)

Replace the front mount (the one with the metal sleeve in it) with the stock piece. This should reduce the vibration some. I feel a pretty good amount of stiffness with this set up. Not harsh at all.
Re: Convince me not to remove my Poly motor mounts! (little p)

The Autotech mount doesn't even replace that piece. I've only got the 2 parts that everyone else seems to use.

Try raising the RPM that you let the clutch out. If you keep it a little above 1,000RPM and be easy with the clutch, most of the vibration will be gone.

So I have to change the way I drive because of a motor mount? All I want to know is will it get smoother?
Re: Convince me not to remove my Poly motor mounts! (Silver Jetta 1.8T)

ok - I had 2 poly (clear see through red) motor mounts. When winter rolled in - I had terrible vibrations at idle and when taking off. So I have replaced one of the poly ones with a stock one - I decided which one to remove by following the normal motion of the engine - what you want to do is have a poly mount to interpose the engine torquing while leaving a rubber (stock) one on the opposite side. I really can't tell you right now which one is which since I was under the car and watching the motion of the engine at the time... I should have more info tomorrow though (I'll look at which poly mount I took out

Re: Convince me not to remove my Poly motor mounts! (Gambit)

The vibrations are worst when the engine and/or climate are cold. I got used to mine after a few weeks. I have the ultra stiff Z mount and its not so bad anymore. And you shouldnt have to change your driving style. With the 1.8T you should be taking off from above 2000 RPMS or you're gonna have a bog of some sort. It's alot smoother anyways.

Dude.. come back in 2 weeks.. seriously.. 2 days is no where enough time to get it to settle in.. not to mention, the cold doesn't help.. do you do any long trips, etc. where your car actually really warms up? If not, then forget it.. it'll take you the full 2 weeks. Took mine about a week and a half, and that was after a few days of really warm weather, and me flogging the car on some nice backroads.

I have Autotech mounts, I vibrate some and its about 20 degrees F here, but not that bad, I have to let the clutch out at about 12-1500rpm with the Sachs clutch but It's certainly tolerable, what do you want? My car is probably making 60+ftlbs/tq over stock. I'll take a little vibration to avoid snapping motor mounts whenever I punch it or shift hard, I have Quaife too so I don't get much if any wheel hop but I still think the stock mounts would be the first thing to go if/when I break something.
VROOOOOOOM " oooh my wheels are not hopping and the power is to the ground better "
There you go now your convinced

Re: Convince me not to remove my Poly motor mounts! (Silver Jetta 1.8T)

Thanks to all who responded.
UPDATE: They already seem to be getting slightly better so I'll give them the 2 weeks. I also received word back from Autotech and they suggested removing the Poly mount closest to the engine and leaving just ONE of the aftermarket bushings in. I guess he said they did that on their own project 1.8T as it is much harsher than on the VR6's. THUMBS UP to Ralph @ Autotech for all his help and the quick responses. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
