Coolant Temp prob

Ok, sometimes my coolant temp gauge runs fine but other times it just stays at 0! anyone know what is wrong?

bad sender or loose sender connection either at the sender or on the back of the gauge

probably the backof the gauge becaus ei have aken it apart!
