Coolant Temp Sensor question

710 Views 5 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  bpfoley
Im confused as to which sensor is actually the right one. The sensor I ordered came with the nail head type connector and is marked 12V120. The only other sensor that looks the same is on the back of the motor near the distributor but oil comes out when it is removed and the numbers on it are 24v180. My guess is that it is the sensor on the tranny side that is near where the coolant line goes into the engine there, but it is a spade type connector and the numbers on it are 12V125.
If this is it, can i put the one Ive got in and swap the connector or should I just order the same exact one?
Sorry for the simple question

Re: Coolant Temp Sensor question (yellow68)

Coolant temp sensor is the off-white 2-prong unit at the lower left hand side (7 'o' clock) of the driver's side coolant flange on the head. The pieces you mention are temp senders for temp gauge and the other not used.
Re: Coolant Temp Sensor question (yellow68)

Yellow, It sounds like you are replacing the sender for your temp gage. If I remeber correctly there are two on the 16v, one on either side of the plastic coolant fitting on the side of the head. I think lotus is talking about the sensor which feeds info to the computer and not the temp gage.
If its the sender then go ahead and make the connector work. If its the sensor then get the correct part. Like I said, it sounds like you're dealing with the sender.

Ok, that makes sense. I was surprised by what the sensor looked like when i got it. I thought it would be different, which apparently it is. There must have been a miscommunication when I ordered it.

Thanks.

That one actually fits too. You just have to remove the plastic around the female spade connector and slide it on sideways over the nail head. I got mine at the dealer and it works fine.
