Corrado problem areas -- some questions

505 Views 12 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  ran
I hope to soon be the owner of a 93 Corrado. I'm going to look at it this weekend and just wanted to get some ideas of what problem areas I should be looking for on the car. Whatever problems you have experienced or if there are things I should keep an eye out for -- these are the types of things I am looking for.
Thanx

Hello here is a list of common problems for you.
1. sunroof-tilts but wont slide back.
2. heater core (find out if cooling system recall has been done. VW should cover this on all SLC's).
3. syncros-If the transmission grinds going into a gear esp 2nd, then you may have a worn syncro (this can cost big $ to fix.)
4. timing chain tensioners- these generally wear out just below 100k miles you can tell by listening for a rattle or clacking noise at idle, that may go away under higher rpms.
Otherwise just check the things you would on any used car. Check and make sure the CV boots are intact(look under front there is a shaft running to each wheel with a rubber ribbed boot on each end.)
If they are torn then the grease leaks out and dirt gets into the CV joint and ruins it. check the wear on the tires and make sure it's even. listen to the engine, there should be no odd mechanical sounds. see how the clutch feels, it shouldn't slip or make any noise. check the brake rotors and pads for bad wear. Look for any signs it has been wrecked and repaired. Usually you can tell if the panels don't line upp good or you can see signs of repainting in a certain area. etc etc....
thats all I can think of right now. Good luck!

Thanks for the post NoC
. I'll keep all that in mind. I'm pretty excited to find a rado in my area. I thought I'd have to go FAR to get one.
If there is anything else that I should be on the lookout for, pls post. Thanx all.

Problem areas start near the front bumper and don't stop until the rear bumper.
A good site if you haven't check it out already is http://www.corrado-club.com They cover known problems, fixes, mods, etc etc. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Does the timing chain tensioner thing happen in g60's too? I sometimes do hear that rattling at idle and I'm at about 85k miles. Is this a bolt-on a replacement-type fix or is there more to it? What can I expect to pay parts/labor?
Thanx

Timing chain/tensioners is vr6 only (you have a timing belt)
The common G60 rattle is the rod bearings going. See the CCA page for the replacement write up

Yeah what he said!

Seriously though ran, take your time and be careful. I probably looked at half of the SLC's in MA, and NH, and a lot of them were pretty shady. Oddly enough I ended up buying one that was almost ready for the junkyard and resurrected it. I figured the only way to avoid all the problems was to get one that was already broken and fix everything... http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Is there something wrong with going for one FAR away??
I am planning on flying to New Jersey to drive one back home...I live in Topeka Kansas--approx 1200 miles

NoC, can you be a little more specific on what you mean shady? You understand how that would make me a little concerned...

Re: Corrado problem areas -- some questions (redcorradoguy)

I would definitely get a mechanic to check out a potential purchase before travelling long distances. Since there are so few (if any) low mileage C's in my area I ended buying a 1993 black C from a guy in Hawaii. with 35K miles. I then had it shipped in a container to the West Coast. Just be careful and ask lots of questions.
Re: Corrado problem areas -- some questions (madcowz)

BTW guys this is a VR6 car 5-sp. It is not to far to go for a look, but as I am the one going up to NH with him I would like to send this ttt one more time.
I will be taking it for a drive so testing out syncros/clutch shouldn't be a problem. I will also bring my spark plug wire tool and run a compression check. This is not a high mile car, I believe approx75K. Does anyone know what this should have for compression, 1993 VR6.
Thanks all

Does anybody have any idea what the compression should be for a 93 VR6?
