Corrado VR6 timing chain...

How often do these need to be changed..(if at all)?????? I've heard conflicting stories on the subject. Some say not for life of engine, some say they can break like any other timing belt. The shop that is rebuilding my VR6 has seemed to have lost my chains. They claim "oh, you are gonna need new ones anyway, you dont want to put all that money into your motor, only to put the old chains back on.....its a good idea to get new chains"......Now is this B.S.????? I always understood that this is why they are "chains"....not belts. That you dont need to replace them???? WHATS THE TRUTH????? AM I BEING HORNED??? Mad love to anyone with any assistance in this frustrating matter....

I would repace them if the engine is apart. They do stretch

But you should get on the shop's ass for losing the old chains, it doesn't matter if you need new ones or not, make them absorb some of the cost.

Yep! I doubt theyll find it also...
If the motor is out, id replace it but i really dont think youd need to. Just tell the shop you talked to people on this site and we said you wouldnt need a new one!
Tell them, they lost the old one so they get to buy the new one! PLAIN AND SIMPLE...............

That is pretty messed up.... them losing the chains. Thats an organized mech for ya. Sure hope he doesn't lose your guides when he's putting it all back together..... ohhh dude sorry.... oops. Anyway, yes they are chains, so they don't have to be changed every 70k, but they do wear out. Even though I would not be suprised to hear of someone having 200k on their chains, I agree with the shop, as long as you all ready have them off, change them. They have broke in other VR6s. And just with that small chance of the chains breaking and trashing valves, pistons and possibly your head... its worth it, to me. Just another 100 bucks
added to your $1500 bill.

I bought new ones even though my old ones looked fine. Fairly cheap peace of mind. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

I would tell a mechanic who lost my timing chain (if i were you, i have a belt in my G60
) that we have a SERIOUS trust issue at that point.
What seems to go on the VR6 engines is the tensioners, not the chains themself (if you get the tensioners before it's too late). If the engine was apart, tensioners would be job one, and if it were my engine the chains would get done too as long as your there.

Replace the chains now and latter you don't have to worry about them. The tensioners should be replaced along with guide rails. If you have the extra money do the head job. Take it to a machine shop and replace valve stem seals and guides. Resurface the head and all that good stuff and put new head gasket w/new stretch bolts. The machine shop that I took it to cost me about $300.00 to do the whole job. Make sure all parts are GERMAN! Now, make sure when the mechanic puts everything back on the engine and he's ready to install the top tensioner to take the piston out and clean it good, inside & out with new oil. Then he should put a very small piece of wire in the front part of pistion and gently collaspe it into place inside the tensioner its self. Now your ready to install the tensioner. Good luck!

I replaced mine at 199,900 miles. I did it as I was doing my cams and saw that the guides were worn through the lining. I compared the two chains and you could tell the old one was streched a little. I have heard of them needing to be replaced as low as eighty K. Keep in mind V.W. says they will last the life of the motor and there is no scheduled replace by date as a timming belt would have.
I would think that the guy who lost the chains would need to absorb some of the cost for new chains. How can he say you need to replace them if he doesn't have them to look at to even tell if they were or are bad. Where is his proof of you needing new ones.
If you need to get new ones I can get you a set and the guides for a good deal from the dealer, tensioner also if needed. I will pass my price of cost + ten% to you if you pay shipping.

You really want to have to do this to your motor again?:

You have a good mechanic, take his advise.
