Re: Cost of fixing sagging headliner (vwstein)

I called a few places about it once and was quoted 200 CDN (approx 120 USD) to have it done. This would not include the moonroof piece. Double it if you need that done also since you need to take the moon roof out.
Hope that helps.

I assume you've got the clothe style headliner as opposed to the older vinyl one. You can get geadliner cloth at a fabric store, then you use some spray adhesive to bond it to the backing material. Not difficult at all.

Re: Cost of fixing sagging headliner (Yellow Rabbit)

I checked into having my headliner done an upholstry shop in my town. I have an '82 Rabbit with the fabric headliner and a sunroof. They wanted just under $300.00 (!) to redo the headliner in the same color as mine. A little more for the sunvisors. I have the pumpkin orange/tan interior.
The companies that advertise to have headliners for Rabbits never seem to have one for the fabric headliners like mine.
I'm looking into making one of my own but I haven't yet been able to fine a suitable headliner material. I'd rather not have to go with a black headliner but that may be my only choice. I'm also a little nervous about the whole sunroof part because I'm not sure how it will attach to the sunroof panel.
On the other hand, I'm really getting tired of having to duck in my seat each morning on the way to work because of my droopy headliner!

Re: Cost of fixing sagging headliner (BadasslilGTI)

I worked at a trim shop for about 2 years and did these all the time. If you don't have a sunroof then it is a piece of cake, especially on a small older car. With the sunroof you just do the hole roof in one piece like normal and then cut a hole in the middle where the sunroof hole is. Make some careful cuts out of there and you will need to make more cuts near the corners to get the material to pull up in the corners. Always be careful not to cut too much off. The sunroof panels aren't that difficult. Some have a cardboard piece cover in the middle and I usually just threw those away and glued the headliner right to the panel and then just wrapped it around the edges. Some cars need thinner material for the sunroof panels so that they slide nicely but I haven't ever looked at a rabbit to see, I doubt it does though. At the shop we used glue pots that would compress the glue and we could spray it nicely. Spray both the board and the material and then when it tacky but not wet you put them together and smooth them with your hand. Well, anyway.... just do it yourself if you think you can do that. If you pay then for a rabbit don't pay over 100 for one without a sunroof and with the sunroof around 150 is about right. For fabric.....I never messed with anything other than fabric...

for a quick fix and no $$, use an office stapler and hit it with some staples.... (fold the stapler back, like hanging a poster on a wall)
I've done this to mine, the staples stay in and the headliner is not touching my head when I'm driving...

Re: Cost of fixing sagging headliner (Giovanni)

if your gonna keep this thing, then upgrade to a vinyl, and get the parts to do so from a junker. (wire bows and clips) I do my own, and did one for a friend for $100, but it was a sunroof model, won't do it again for that price. it takes ~4 hrs- 8w/sunroof bout 1/2 that if you stick with cloth
The estimates I've got for vinyl are $100 pickup, $150 no sunroof, $250 if sunroof These can be a pain, especially if you use a heavy vinyl (cloth is a breeze)
mat'ls = $15.00 either way,

I too am an upholster by trade... I usually quote people around $140 for plain rabbit headliner, $160 if you want the rear quarter panels done too... and like $225 for rear quarters, and sunroof panel.. I know we get beat on price by the mobile guys at the dealers, and probably some small upholstery shops around, but a lot of times you get what you pay for... anyway, good luck to you.. HTH!

Re: Cost of fixing sagging headliner (vwstein)

I just got mine done. Complete headliner w/sunroof, new material on the C pillars, two new visors and new material on the bottom cushion of both front seats for $300.
Looks absolutely perfect. Have gone the cheap route before several times and it looked exactly like that, cheap!
Try to find a small shop (like a guy who does it out of a garage). Mine was done by a guy at a municipal airport. Not much business there this time of year and he needed the $. Definitely made a $$$ difference for me.

Re: Cost of fixing sagging headliner (vwstein)

On my 82 Rabbit S, blue interior, I did something creative to fix this.
I went to the fabric store and bought some fake fur. It was a dark blue/dark grey cow hide print....about 1/2 inch deep. I glued that on the cardboard backing with the 3M stuff and ran it down the A and C pillars. It looked pretty pimpish....alas I totalled that car. So if you see a funky headliner in a mauled 82 S in a junkyard around Salem Oregon, it was mine

HTH
