A lot of people have done this I am sure. What you want to check when chosing a core is the pressure drop across the IC, the number of charge rows, the construction type, and always look for IAT data that other members may have posted to gauge whether the thing really works or not. End tank design is also important, but for our applications, it is not as important relative to the pressure drop.
What I would do is look at some of the more popular cores our there, ER, Race-Tec, etc. and see how their cores look, how they are constructed, and all that jazz, then look to your "universal" IC and see how it compares.
