I haven't seen a lot of discussion on the topic of customizing Infotainment screens yet and I think this is a feature about which many non-owners are unaware. You certainly won't find any reviewers talking about this, they're too busy fussing over volume knobs.

This is the Infotainment "home screen", which is presented when you tap the home screen box on the far left.

On the bottom you can see three dots. These represent additional panels you can use simply by swiping left/right.

[Swipe Left Again to the Third Panel]

Some of these widgets can also have sub-panels inside of them, such as vehicle data and climate controls. For instance, you can swipe left inside the climate control widget to pan through all of the climate related options [Heated/Ventilated Seats -> Classic Climate Controls -> Smart Climate Controls]

[Swipe left once on the climate control widget]
The widget goes from heated seats to classic climate options:

Each panel can be customized to display the information of interest to you. The process will feel familiar to creating shortcuts from the drop down menu on the infotainment. To modify the current panel, long press on the screen and you will get a menu of options for each available widget:

Notice how the left widget is currently selected, which is done simply by tapping on it. Once a widget is selected, you can choose from a variety of display options down below, or clear the selection with the trash can icon. The number of options you get for any particular widget will depend on its size.

You can define up to four panels in addition to the home screen. To create a new panel, tap the pencil icon in the top right corner:

Then you can tap the "+" icons to create a new panel that will be inserted either to the left or the right of the current panel. When you create a new panel, you can then choose the widget layout at that time:

Once a new panel is created, you can then tap any of the individual widgets in that panel and select what information will be linked to it.

Additional Comments and Observations:
  • The list of all interface display options are the following, but not all options are available for every widget size:
    • App-Connect, Climate Control, Driving Data, Help, Legal Notices, Map, Radio, Route, Settings, Setup Car-Net, Sound, Telephone, Vehicle.
  • This is a handy way to maintain constant access to the features you use the most without losing the entire screen when accessing that feature. Don't want to lose the radio when changing the temperature? Just create a panel that has the radio and climate control widgets and you can use both without the screen needing to change.
  • One unfortunate limitation is that a widget can only appear on one panel. If you try to create a climate control widget on two panels, it will remove it from the existing panel and move it to the one most recently added. Boooo.
  • The smaller icons are simply shortcuts to the full screen. Hitting the "home" button from there will take you back to the panel you were on and not the "home" panel itself. For instance, if I create a panel that uses a small icon to link to the navigation map, I can tap on the map icon from my customized panel and the whole screen becomes the navigation map. When I hit the "home" button from there, it goes back to the previous panel that launched it.
It's tough to outline precisely all the options at your fingertips here in a short post, but hopefully it gives some people awareness about this feature that is hardly ever talked about but pretty nicely implemented and offering additional convenience.

VW is doing themselves no favors by not having tutorial videos to show owners (and potential owners) all of these tricks
They are doing a terrible job. I hate to ask has none of your sales people shown you knowyourvw. It helps a whole lot with things like @Windemere shown. Here is the link for those interested. Knowyourvw GTI Specific edit: Golf R as well apparently.

I wish there was either a feature or an update that would turn allow you to the touch pads on/off that are right at the bottom of the screen. That way if you wanted to use them you could. Otherwise you can turn off that feature and not get annoyed if you touched them by accident. Then again I had to use the volume portion twice because all the functions on my steering wheel stopped working twice. Ive had many software issues. And to clear them up I stop the car. Turn it off. Open and close the door, turn the car on and the problem is no longer there. This time it didnt work. So I turned the car off and got out. Locked the doors. Waited 2 min's and turned the car on. Problem went away. Ive made 2 appointments with VW in the last 3 weeks but couldnt make it.

Our dealership said they can’t keep the cars in stock long enough to familiarize themselves with all the million features. It may be true, being in sales there’s nothing worse than not knowing the answer. There were 2 couples after us waiting to see if we were going to buy the GTI SE 6MT, as word got out that it came in that afternoon. Glad we were first to get there. Been waiting a while.
