CUT the shifter 1 1/2 inch, or get a short shifter kit?

im wonderin if it would hurt to cut my stick shifter or shoud i just spend the money on a whole short shifter kit???????

I have the short shifter kit but also want to cut the stick down. But i have a question on how to put the shift knob back on with out the threads

doesnt a short shift kit just shorten the throws between gears?...from wut i know it doesnt make the lever(shaft) shorter...u could cut it down...but and there is a way to rethread the lever but i forgot how...or if u have a momo knob its held on by 3 allen bolts and the rubber thingy... http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

I have a short shifter and i cut the stick but i have three screws that hold the stick on. you can get or borrow a tap and die set and re thread it if you want to keep the stock knob, it's pretty easy to do.

yea the short shift kits reduce the throw but i want the stick shorter for a more sporty feel!

You need a 12mm / 1.5mm die. I bought mine from snap-on for $7bux cdn because its nearly impossible to find at any of my local hardware stores. I cut about an 1.5" the shifting "feel" was so much better. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

yea, what he ^ said, what I would do is get the tap/die set and start to work where your stock threads end and extend it furthur down the shaft, then cut off. That way it's already threaded. I wish I had done it this way, it's a total pia to start new threads cuz my cut wasn't totally straight, now trying to get the threads straight is difficult......

I cut mine down when I put on my Lupo knob. I used a regular small hose clamp to tighten it down.

I'm wanting to buy a short shifter. Where is the best place to get one. Are they all around 80US? Anything cheaper than that?

Cheapest I've found is from qualityvwparts.com $23, comes out to about $34 with shipping. Looks identical to the $50+ ones, mine should be here in a few days. I'll let you know how it works, that site is great (I also bought a used intake manifold from them for a very reasonable price)

well thanx for all the info, i just got doen cuttin it about 1 inch and had a real CF knob with the three screws and i test drove it and when i threw it into second i almost took my head off with the knob that flew off the stick...turned out the threads of the screw were stipped like no other so i put a different one on and its tight!!

I know a guy who cut his shift knob and then cut part of the cut off piece and then welded the treaded part back on and from what i hear he hasnt had any problems with it

I bought the Air&Water short shifter and then cut it down an inch then just rethreaded it with a threading tool. Took twenty minutes total.
