Cutting shifter rod...How much should go???

So I want to cut my shifter rod because IMO its too long. What's the most that can go? I have a Neuspeed SS and the rod kind of gets bigger towards the base of it and was wondering if that will cause fitment problems with the shift knob. (Im going to put the Lupo GTI knob on it) Thanks

i did 2.25" with a momo race air knob and diesel geek ss.
it feels fantastic.
my friend also did 2.25" with a neuspeed ss.

Shouldn't be a problem if you cut off 2 inches. Get an adjustable small hose clamp rather than the ****ty crimp clamp that it comes with. I tried using the supplied one and the knob just spins. Tightened it up with the new hose clamp and it only moves if you really try to.
