Every shop i've called for a price quote says they replace both drive axles since the remanned ones are so inexpensive nowadays. So my question is, has anyone done this themselves??? Any problem areas??? thanks

Re: CV joints (bollo)

Technically, the job is'nt too hard... usually, it's seized/stripped bolts that get in the way!! Only special tools needed are 12 point bits for the tranny drive flanges and a 30mm socket for the big nut in the middle of the wheel hub. Don't forget to torque that nut to 195lbs*ft with a torque wrench... otherwise, the bearings won't have the correct pre-load and they'll get ruined real fast!!
Re: CV joints (G60syncro)

don't they technically need to be torqued with the wheels off the ground to have a true torque put on the nut??
just time

me and my brother have done ONE in about 4 hours for out first time on an 85 jetta. Not too hard, just make sure you have all the tools nessasary before you start!

I torqued mine with the wheels on the ground @ 195lbs, then drove it to work, and on the following day, I checked the torque again to see if things had settled... never had any trouble with the bearings.
I guess they want you to have the wheels off the ground so that there is'nt anything to prevent the conical bearings from settleing in. If you tighten them pretty hard before dropping the weels on the ground, you should'nt have trouble either.

Re: CV joints (G60syncro)

Wouldn't it be really hard to torque them to 200lbs if the car was in the air? seems like you would twist the car of the stands onto the ground pretty quick..
Re: CV joints (ottawanker)

thanks for all the reply's guys...one more question though?? Where can i get a 30mm impact socket? I went to sears, they didn't have it, neither did Pep Boys...and ideas? I'm assuming the 12 point allen's wrench won't be hard to find, correct? I should of looked for that at sears while i was there, but i got discouraged when they didn't have the socket...

Re: CV joints (bollo)

Try some of the more specialized tool suppliers in your area... Ask a garage if he knows a place where they sell tools. I don't really know how hard metric tools are to find in the US.. I know they are quite easy to come by in Canada. The 12pt sockets, I found them in the specialized tool section... you know, that rack of tools made by Lysle... They have balljoint forks, ring compressors, and all those "wierd" tools...
Re: CV joints (G60syncro)

hmmm...okay...thanks...I guess i just gotta source the tools... I've already found the parts at a good price...damn this sucks.. I just wanna do this
