ALthough, I would have to disagree with the choice of coilovers for a 70 year old couple. They would probably prefer replacement springs and shocks.

I think I would sawzall the axle shaft, but then you might have the same issue putting a new one in.
I think your best bet would be to loosen the motor/transmission mounts to see if you can get that little bit of room.
