Last month we had a dead battery which killed our radio and forced us to bring it into our local VW Dealer to "GET THE RADIO WORKING AGAIN."
When we got it back there was a cassette stuck in it which sometimes played and sometimes didn't. Even though VW had had the unit out, they claimed that this was not their responsibility even though we had paid $100 to "GET THE RADIO WORKING AGAIN."
Though we attempted to pull the radio ourselves we chickened out when it wouldn't come with coat hangers, and subsequently brought it back to VW.
Well, they got it back in order for us, and charged us another $27.50 (we found it less stressful to pay than to argue), and graciously gave us this kind bit of advice that we wish to share with everyone on VW Vortex. NEVER USE AFTERMARKET CASSETTES IN YOUR CASSETTE PLAYER. ALWAYS USE THE PRERECORDED ONES. THE AFTERMARKET ONES GET STUCK!
We figured by passing this on to you guys, it would save you the trouble we went through..... and I mean after all, isn't that precious!

Repeat after me: Bull****.
Do us a favor and tell us who this paragon of audio brilliance is, so we can avoid them in future.
Next time, just go to a reputable audio dealer. They'll have some grasp of reality (as Don says).

I didn't know we could use such words on this forum! But I think that's about what we said to one another as we walked away from the Service Managers desk.
As for who gave us this advice??? Just look at where I am from and take a stab at a guess. Hint, think "Volkswagen of." But hey, I am not looking to get slapped with a lawsuit here, I am just passing on valuable information to owners of VW Cassette players. They got it working for us after all, didn't they? I just think that anyone who makes a statement like that deserves to get due credit for it.
As for cassette players in cars... Hey the car is almost 8 years old. Weren't they just becoming standard then?
No really, my '94 Ford Van only has a radio...fortunately it's not just AM.
But you can call me old fashioned, because on this issue, I am . I do not like the idea of CDs floating around my cars. They are too expensive and get scratched too easily. Maybe with CDRW on our immediate horizon, I will begin to feel a little differently.

Now we get to the root of the problem. The dealer is pissed because they actually had to fix something. On a newer car (read "under the bumper-to-bumper warranty"), they would simply replace the whole unit and send you on your way. You made them work. Its all your fault.

I just happened to sit inside a brand new Ferrari 456 GTA a few weeks back, and it had a (surprise surprice) a tape deck in it. http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif

Hmmm....Before I bought my minidisc, I used to record MP3s onto cassettes. Never had any problems, but my stereo is a few years newer than yours.
Dealer service depts love to overcharge everyone. Whenever I need parts, I make sure to walk in with grease all over my hands and armed with some ETKA printouts
