Diesel + hybrid electric = Aweseome.
Hope they can build it affordably.
Diesels get great highway mileage, hybrids do well in the city. Imagine combining the two!

That would be something to make me want a new vehicle if it gets the best of both worlds.

I'm surprised at how close the fuel economy ratings of the diesel (37mpg) and gas (34mpg) variants are. If the diesel engine is more expensive to build (as most are today), I can't see it being picked over the gasser. 3 mpg isn't particularly significant, especially for having greater (and perhaps cheaper) access to fuel.

300 hp / 291 lbs/ft for the gas 34 mpg
235 hp / 424 lbs/ft for deisel 37 mpg
Guess it's down to how you want your power.
