The “Direct Hybrid” is a V6 gasoline hybrid that uses spray-guided direct injection (GDI) to optimize efficiency of the engine. The “Bluetec Hybrid” uses a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system to meet future diesel emissions requirements. Both use the same mild hybrid transmission—not the full two-mode GM/DaimlerChrysler hybrid powertrain under development.

Diesel + hybrid electric = Aweseome.
Hope they can build it affordably.
Diesels get great highway mileage, hybrids do well in the city. Imagine combining the two!

That would be something to make me want a new vehicle if it gets the best of both worlds.

I'm surprised at how close the fuel economy ratings of the diesel (37mpg) and gas (34mpg) variants are. If the diesel engine is more expensive to build (as most are today), I can't see it being picked over the gasser. 3 mpg isn't particularly significant, especially for having greater (and perhaps cheaper) access to fuel.
