Dealer Wanted To Flash My Chip!

My windown regulator failed today so I had to bring the car in. I was getting ready to leave when I was getting my stuff out of the car when the service manager came over (we know each other very well from all of my problems I have had of the years with my Golf and now the Jetta) and said, "will you quit breaking stuff."
I told him this was my first window regulator to go and I had the Golf for 3 years and this car for 2.5 so I actually felt kind of lucky that I have't had one go before.

Anyway, we BSed for a few min and he told me how VW is now flashing 1.8ts so that the run smoother and all of that good stuff.

He said that he might as well flash my car while it is in for service and I was like..... yeah, ok......

Well I got ready to leave and sat there and thought for a few min. I really didn't feel like driving all the way back up to Belmar to see Johns ugly face (just kidding, John you da man!) so I went back in and said, "would you mind not flashing my car." He said no problem and that was that.
So.... I guess now he knows I am chipped if he didn't already know.

What would you have done? I guess I could potentially screw myself in the long run but oh well.

You didn't tell him you were chipped, just that you didn't want him to flash you

Ummm one test drive with your car and they know you are chipped. I'm sure they know already since your Up chip wasn't reverted to stock for the visit.

that sucks with the manufacturers warranties eh ?

sometimes it sucks to have a brand new car when you really gotta watch out not to void the warranty

At least they asked before doing anything. My last visit was a nightmare because my dealership decided to change out my whole (APRed) ECU because they couldn't communicate with it. All they where to do was change the coilpacks. I had them reinstall my original stating that they didn't get my authorization to do any more work other than the coilpacks.

Come on, he had an Up chip, no one could tell the difference.

why would they test drive for a window regulator....do they have to do a 100mph wind test to make sure the window doesnt fall down?

That is shady because the dealers shouldn't be flashing an 2001 AWW ECU for coils. Only AWP are supposed to get the reflash and only if they had issues in the past with cold starts.

Is there proof of this, I have an AWP with coil pack problems, and I would like to have my ECU reflashed if it would help
I am nto chipped yet so it sounds like a good idea for me.

It is in the Tech Bulletin and recall details that the dealer got from VWoA. Someone posted it a while ago, but I don't have it off hand. Just let them know you want the reflash with the new coils.

Does anyone have good info on that stock AWP reflash? I've heard various things such as it will actually reduce the car's performance, that it just ignores the misfires while cold, that it changes the idle Air/Fuel map, etc...
Does anyone know the real poop on this subject? Thanks!

Chris86 probably knows the deal. He is a tech now and I'm sure he has checked on this.

very good point fgured I would as much of the thread as I could to see if anyone caught this, not only are they not supposed to only flash AWPs, but they are only capable of flashign AWPs, there is no file for any of the AWWs that the dealer has to even flash it. In this case it would have checkd the ECU part number and said that the flash was not needed.

They have not given us any information on what exactly is changed. It is possible they just desensitized the misfire recognition at idle when cold, but its more likely that they tuned it to prevent misfires since alot of the times people actually notice the misfures befoer the light comes on.

No, I never said it was chipped but as soneone else said, one test drive and they will know for sure.
That extra 8 mph and 1.5 less seconds in the 1/4th would be hard to miss.
