Dear lord tell me it ain't what I think it is (heater core related)

555 Views 18 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  Karman
Arrived at the office today and shut the car down. Oddly, I hear a gurgling/boiling type noise behind the dash that I don't recall ever hearing before. Is this a warning that the core is about to go? I tried off and on for two years to get VWoA to perform this recall some years back but they kept telling me my car "is not in the VIN spread" for that recall work. BTW, I am the original owner, 1993 SLC, 45000 miles. Please tell me that this gurgling noise is not the core letting loose. I will freak out if hot coolant spills inside my car. And what's up with some SLCs not being covered by this recall?

Testing........testing.........
Is this thing on?
Re: Dear lord tell me it ain't what I think it is (VR6guy)

Every Corrado is covered, even some early Golf's and Jetta's,Passat's too!
Call VWOA and biotch day and night. They will fix or refund you money if you have it done by a shop.
Re: Dear lord tell me it ain't what I think it is (KinetikSLC)

I'm telling you that I've been through all that. I attempted to have the recall work done even though the core never actually blew. There is a recall for SLCs whereby a pressure release valve or something is installed to prevent the core from blowing. This is my understanding anyway. Problem is, my car does not fall within the covered VIN spread. I've been to 10 dealerships and talked with 50 people at VWoA, they all say the same thing. I don't understand it because I've never heard of another VR6 Corrado not being covered.
So what is up with this gurgling noise? Is this a warning that the core is about to go or what? I've just recently sunk $2000 into "routine" maintenance for this car with 40,000 miles--I won't be able to handle this
Some days I abhor this car.......

99% sure it's your heater core, it's the only thing back there that would make a boiling noise.
What's the month/year build date on your car?
Mine's 11/92 and it was replaced under recall.

Iain,
Keep calling, say that the core busted while you were driving, sprinkle some fresh coolant on your carpet, and say you got burned by the hot sweltering coolant, and you are going to sue.Get a lawyer friend to make a phone call.

The core usually tends to fog up the front windshield when its ready and ripe.uncontrollable fogging of windshield, then kaboom, smell of coolant thru the vents and some misting in the compartment.
If you want an good job done, and not a dealer hack job,buy the core ($55.00) and bring me the car, also bring a bottle of coolant, and I will replace for you for $300.

my car gurgles all the time... i mean ALL the time.
if it didn't, i would wonder if something was wrong. as far as i know, its just some air that has been introduced into the system. its just air making its way through the piping. like farting if you will.
i would bleed the coolant system, only there is no real way to bleed it. ah well

my car has air too.damn VW's.
I should have not listened to that damn little Kris on me shoulder, and spared the VW and buy 996.
Re: Dear lord tell me it ain't what I think it is (KinetikSLC)

Tell the VW stealership that the coolant burnt you and would like something done about this and you heard that there was a recall for this. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

yeah, but then what would you do on the weekends during your normal "fix this POS car" time?
Re: Dear lord tell me it ain't what I think it is (NeedSLCBad)

work and figure out how to get the $8k to "chip" the 996.

VR6 guy,
Your car should be covered by the recall if you want it (I think it's a half-assed attempt to correct the heater core problem). Best thing you'll get is a new fan control module. I asked to have the restrictor left out.
My bet is that your noise is the aux. coolant pump. Get out, unplug the pump, and I bet that the noise stops. The new ones tend to become unbelieveably noisy. I took mine apart, cleaned it, and lightly lubed the post that the impeller spins on. It has been quiet ever since.
Good luck....lemme know if you need any more detailed info.

ohh the memories ....
the day mine blew up my car sounded like it was squeeking, i acually thought i had a mouse in my car. so i get in my car and drive to some girls house not even 25 miles away. i park the car and it sounds like some 1 is slurping from a straw... then boom my car gives me a steam cleaning. funny thing was all my temps were normal so i screwed home. as soon as i got to my driveway...splash coolent everywhere. bitching at vwoa is useless i called so many times they just tell me there is no "OPEN" recalls on the car so i paid for the part and had my friend who owns his own vw shop do it

Re: Dear lord tell me it ain't what I think it is (VR6guy)

My car has a 3/93 build date and accoeding to VWoA, it is NOT covered by any sort of heater core recall. Screw it, I'll drive it until it lets loose and then pay $1000 to have it fixed. Yay...
Re: Dear lord tell me it ain't what I think it is (VR6guy)

Contact NHTSA. I was in contact with them when they were working with VW to find a solution to the heater core problem. I'm sure they'd be interested to hear about this.
The car is a VR6 Corrado. It has problems with the cores blowing at the endcaps. End of story.
VW sucks.

I'll see if I can find some of my old info on this.

Vr6guy,
I fail to understand how your car could not be covered by the recall.
http://cory.charltonfamily.org/gti/vwtechcontent/pdf/UECir.pdf
The UE recall covers all SLC's from 92-92 according to the vin number listed in the recall: NK000001 - RK003774
NK - 92
PK - 93
RK - 94
So, the recall should cover all 92's and 93's, and 94 till vehicle number 3774

It's the aux coolant pump. they start to make noise as they age. you can either replace it or deal with it till it dies.

Exactly. For everyone that hasn't heard this before, shut off your car and sit there for a minute. After the aux. coolant pump has run for a few seconds, you're bound to hear it. Its not just the pump running (or failing). Don't sweat it VR6Guy - my car does it even with a new core.
