can you fit a 5 spd tranny from a 86 gti 16v or an 81 rabbit 8v to an 81 deisel pickup.or do you nead a 5 spd from another desel

You can (physically) but the diesel trannys use the lower final (3.89) and taller 5th gear (0.76 or 0.71). FF and FN are common:
