Detailer scratched my windows!!!

788 Views 17 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  4DR Turbo
I took my car to a detail shop to remove overspray paint from all over my car. They used clay to remove it from the paint and steel wool 0000 for windows. Paint came out really nice like brand new but windows are all scratched up
I went back to him and he declines that he did that. I'm so mad. He told to go to a dealer and tell them that I only wash my car at car washes and my windows are scratched, and come back to him. The worst are front door driver and pasanger window, the rest I can live with they are not that bad. Anyone knows how much are front door windows, and how hard is it to change them? and what can I do about this. Can I get money from him for new windows? Please Help

Sorry to hear that! Not in defense of the dealer, but these freaking VW's windows are soft as hell. They pit and scratch as if they were made of plexiglass. I scratched my windshield using the squeegee at the Mobil.

anyone else? I don't know what to do
Re: Detailer scratched my windows!!! (SpeedyGLX)

the dealer will only replace anything if your proved they did it.
Its your word against the tech that worked on it .. of course he will deny if he knew hes wrong.
Sorry to hear such experience.
Re: Detailer scratched my windows!!! (SpeedyGLX)

Your word against his.
The efforts you'd undergo to go to small claims court (and I'm sorry to say, but you'd lose) would be more than replacing them.
Try glass polishes and then talk to the dealer for replacement.
Re: Detailer scratched my windows!!! (Jman5000)

i had my shotgun side seat replaced. the tech had ripped up the leather replacing a window regulator. i couldnt technically prove it was his fualt... but the dealership didnt fight me on it and they got me a new seat free of charge.

Sort of sucks that the cheap Advantix camera I got at Wal-mart has come in handy so often at the dealer.
I got in the bad habit of taking pictures of the vehicle every time I take it in for service, just in case. And while they yelled and screamed that the damage wasn't their fault - it's hard to argue with time-stamped photos taken right before you pull out of the driveway.
Especially when you're quite willing to show people the photographic proof of the before and after service photos, along with letting them see how good a job they do on the repairs to fix damage.

Though it was a hint from the insurance agent to make sure I take an occasional time-stamped photo of the vehicle, just in case.

Re: Detailer scratched my windows!!! (SpeedyGLX)

Hmmmm...I am thinking about replacing my windshield due to 2 small pits and numerouse small pits. Is there some other way to remove the pits and specks without having to replace the entire windshield? (I was quoted $325 for OEM windshield & seal, incl. installation by local auto glass co.) I know someone mentioned glass polish--which brand and how effective is it? Is there any coating I can put on the windshield to prevent or minimize future damage??

Actually had that one bookmarked ...
Looks like it says glass polish works for scratches you can't feel with your nail.

To all the people that says its his word against the shop. Thats not true, and not by a long shot. Body shops, Dealers , Service stations ect ect are required to inspect the car when taking possesion & keys. They are responsible for documenting any existing damage espically if they are performing work that it is even remotely related to the existing damage. At this point a dealer who is performing body work should note what is wrong with the car and note this on the reciept at time of drop off. The customer then has every right to inspect his car prior to accepting it back from a shop. If the car has any damage that was not noted on the car before hand and has a good possibility of being incurred on the shop grounds they ( shop ) must prove it was already on the car ( and will be required to prove why they didn't take note of this ). And guess what fellas that workorder from dropping the car off is a legal document. You've got a car that was dropped off and returned with damage that was not previously there ( according to the dealers work order ). You've got a solid legal case and he doesn't have a leg to stand on in court. Nothing.
The question that decides this is at what point did you point out to the dealer that the window was scratched ? If you did it after leaving the lot your probably SOL , if you pointed it out before leaving I'd ask why you brought in a car to have a windshield inspected for damage and cleaned and had it returned full of scratches that they didn't say where there in the place

Hey! I was standing about 10 feet away from you today when you were at Millennium getting an estimate. In fact, I told the guys that I thought that someone had just posted on the Vortex about scratched windows. Small world!

Re: Detailer scratched my windows!!! (SpeedyGLX)

I had to replace my main winshield, the station paid my deductable $250, those windows for our cars aren't cheap!! I think it came to about $800 or so, thank god I didn't pay a dime! what kind of detail shop did you go to? Was it a well recognized one or some no name joe. If they did that to my windows I would talk to whomever the owner is and make them pay

Good luck bro
