Disable DRLs with Euro Switch w/ TFL pin already bent

1569 Views 10 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  kodomokid
I need some help. I just bought a euro switch for my 99 Passat and disabled the DRLs by bending back the "TFL" pin in it. It works fine, no DRLs while driving with the switch in "off" position. But when I go to turn on my parking lights while I am driving, those damn DRLs come on.
Has anyone been able to completely get rid of these stupid, bulb waisting DRLs?
Thanks!!!

Yes...The thing is, they are disabled when I am driving with out any lights turned on. When I turn on the the parking lights when driving, the DRLs come on.

unbend the TFL pin now and see what happens

Well, the thing is if I bend it back, then the DRLs will be on all the time. I don't want them on at all. But thanks anyways.

Hate to sound completely dumb here... but are you SURE you have a Euroswitch? The regular NA spec switch does that, but my euroswitch sure dosen't.
You have 3 positions for rotation, and 2 push/pull positions. Should be a total of 5 light icons visible Going clockwise starting from about 8 o' clock you should have rear fog, front fog, then Off (O), City/Parking lights, then headlights....
?

Yes I do have a euro switch...I bought it off of a group buy here on Vortex. Guys, I know what I am talking about. My friend's Jetta GLI does not turn on the DRLs when the parking lights are turn on either, but for some odd reason it does on my Passat. Is there no other way to totally disable the DRLs other than pulling out the 173 relay? I hear that it disables your brake warning light on the dash.

I hadn't paid enough attention to notice you are talking about a Passat here. Search on "DRL Passat" in the archives, I see a message mentioning some other pin (56d) you might have to tape over.
Edit: And then later someone says that doesn't help, and the only solution is to pull the 173 relay...

No problem. Thanks for the advice. It looks like I am down to pulling the 173 relay but I am hesitant since no one seems to be 100% sure that the DRLs are the only device fed by that relay. Cheers

I don't know if the B5 Passats had them, but are you perhaps talking about the city lights? (The little, 5W, bulbs usually in the high beam reflector...) If that is the case, then when you turn the Euroswitch to parking lights (middle position), you should get: instrument lights, side markers (not the turn signal repeaters), rear lights, and then the city lights (instead of the amber turn signals). When you turn it to full on, it's all of the above plus low beams.
If it IS the city lights, that is exactly what is supposed to happen. If you get your amber turn signals plus low beams at a lower power in the middle position, then I haven't a clue what might be happening!

Hey all...I decided to just pull out the 173 relay. It is my best solution though I am not very comfortable with it yet. Thank you all who replied. Also, just to let you know, US-spec stock headlight assemblies on the B5 do not have city lights, I believe that only the euro style and HID assems do.
