my montes are about a year old... i can notice the lug holes on them are kinda yellowish... how do you go about making them silver again... i assume a scotch brite pad or an sos pad will fix things, yes?

I would not suggest this.
I believe this is a clearcoat issue?

BUMP
I am having similar problems.
Re: (Red Pocket Rocket)

what kind of "wheel cleaner" are you guys using?
Re: discolored montes (abe1.8t)

It IS a clearcoat issue.
I just sold my Monte Carlos, but before I waxed them and sent them off to the buyer, I noticed two areas where the clearcoat was peeling in the lug nut area. All of the lug nuts on the wheels had turned yellow-ish because of the clearcoat.
We touched up one of the clearcoat spots, but when we went to touch-up the second spot, the tape we put down near it to prevent getting clearcoat any where else actually RIPPED the entire clearcoat off from one of the lut nut areas. Underneath, the paint was as gray as the wheels were new. Turns out the clearcoat had developed a fog in it that causes it to turn yellow-ish over time.
What we discovered is that the Monte Carlos have so many different finishes--light grey around the lug area, polished on the spokes, and gunmetal on the inserts--that Speedline (the manufacturer) probably just blasts them with a single clearcoat spray at the end of their painting/assembly. Problem is, the clearcoat has a problem sticking to the light grey paint around the lug nuts.
Luckily, the clearcoat issues don't seem to extend beyond the lug nuts. So if the peeling/color issues gets REALLY bad, you could just strip the area around the lug nuts, get a good airbrush and spray some a layer of VW touch-up clearcoat over the paint so that it'll hold.
I took amazing care of my rims, I was really pissed to see that I had clearcoat problems (luckily it was only in two areas). It's a shame for such awesome rims.

Re: discolored montes (U n i o n 0015)

Thanks. It does suck but so far my problem has been very limited.
Re: discolored montes (Inigo Montoya)

Would the clearcoat on the rims be under warranty in any way?

Re: discolored montes (Holksvagon)

Should be part of the 12K fit and finish. Several people have had success with dealers, others havent. To me this is a manufacturer's defect, and is effecting several people with Montes.
Re: discolored montes (fierrpawz)

I'll go check that out tommorow... i'll let all of ya know how it goes... thx for the info
Re: discolored montes (Holksvagon)

Cleaned mine today- no peeling yet. I make sure to keep them waxed very well. I also cleaned a set at the wash today... GTI w/ 29k miles, and they are starting to turn yellow and green and peel in some places... very tacky in my opinion. I guess I'm just lucky right now.
