I have been wanting to do this mod for awhile and kept putting it off, and here I found out it was very simple. Instead of buying that exspensive japanese taillight paint I found some cheaper stuff at Wal-Mart
Materials:
Testor's Candy Red Transparent spray paint (at wal-mart in hobby/model section) About $2.50
Hella Clear Taillights
Masking tape (I used 3m painters tape)
Clear Coat Spray Paint
Here is a picture of what the spray paint looks like, I got 2 bottles which was the perfect amount for 2 coats on my taillights.

Start off by removing taillights, I don't have any pictures but it isn't difficult, open the velcro door behind your taillights and remove the wiring harness at the bottom of the light then squeeze and pull out the bulbs. Next you need to remove three nuts and pull the taillight out. Make sure to clean the taillight.
Next mask off the areas that you don't want painted. I went for the r/c/c/r look.
Take your spray paint and make back and forth motions never stopping on the taillight. After the first coat is applied wait 30 mins and put on another coat. Continue doing this until you reach the darkness/color that you want.

I let the taillight dry over night then removed the masking tape. Then I clear coated the entire taillight and let that dry for a couple of hours. Reinstall lights step back and admire your new customized taillights and have a

Re: DIY Customize Hella Clear Taillights (boralyl)

looks good. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif just make sure you do an a$$load of clearcoat. i smoked the tails on my mk2 gti and it took two sets to realize that the clear coat really is the most important step.
...and it makes it look shiny. heh. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Not bad, I would definitely say kick the clear coat up a notch, and wet sand those puppies until they shine. Other than that, looking good. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
I would love to see someone do this and then smoke those two center clear strips. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
