I found with the Testors spray I used, it held up much better when I clear coated them afterwards. The first time I did them they lasted about a year of hot sun beating on them before they faded and then I re-did them with the clear coat. Much better results.

Is it a spray can though eastcoast? If it is I say, just spray em and if it doesn't work out right you can always take it off with the remover you have.
The name of the stuff I used was Testors Candy Apple Transparent red. It's only about $2 a can and it will do approx. 2 sets of tails.

Re: DIY magic colour tail lights, (rabbitmania)

did mine in blue on my gti... i also used testors (just make sure you use a very thn coat or the same thing will happen to you again.... I used steel wool and rubbing alcohol and it took the paint right off.... deff. use clear coat though. you can find the paint at alot of dept. stores (walmart has pretty many choices), but the best is a model shop, they'll even have the transparent spray tint for doing tinted lenses, and the light shines through pretty good.
good luck, and deff. show some pics then!!

i looked everywhere i couldnt find testors spray paint anywhere. i knew you guys used that stuff too. does all the light shine thru that good? does it make a good coating? no pin holes?
it is called delta ceramdecor. air-dry perm enamel satin finish. its not a spray can its small bottle. where do they sell testors?

Re: DIY magic colour tail lights, (eastcoastdubs)

you can get the testors at model shops or r/c car shops... i got some at a model car shop i boyertown,pa.. it's oly like 45 min. from you, and they have just about any color you could think of.... walmart also has some in their model section...
i believe i saw the ricey stuff that Clone was talking about at strictly foriegn(or strictly crappy as i like to call them), it was made by folia tec, i believe
for the testors stuff you gotta use a bunch of very thin coats to get it w/ pinholes, and yet still show plenty of light through... but you can always wipe it down w/ steel wool and rubbing alcohol and start over if it doesn't work.

That's the colour to use, and the reason we are all saying to use clear is so the paint doesn't fade out.
Did the paint you get say it was transparent or not, eastcoast? I don't remember seeing any of the transparent colours in that shade.
Here's a pic of my tails so you can see how they turned out.

I heard from my rice-friends that you're supposed to use transparent metal paint, in thin coats.
Please post any pics of Jettas (2nd gen) with painted indicators and plain backups.

Re: DIY magic colour tail lights

I did mine with th Testor's paint and clearcoat and it worked out very good. Except for the fact that the clearcoat reacted with the reverse part and made it crack a little on both. Oh well, I'll do it on another pair this summer.

Wow, that's almost what it cost here in Canada. I figured it would only be about $2 where you live. What store did you buy the paint at? Try Michaels Art and Craft store. That's where I got mine.
*edit* Just saw your pic, it's definetly not right. Oh well you tried, right?
With the transparent you only have to spray the parts you want changed, not the already red part. Don't forget to clear coat them too.
