Do I need a new cat?

How long should a cat last? I just purchased a magnaflow and I have 113K on the stock exhaust. Other than the heat shield rattling, I think the system is in good shape. Should I replace the cat while I am in there? One other thing, I failed my emmissions check last time. Could the cat help?

if your cat is shot it will smell like rotten eggs,and it causes it to backfire alot sometimes it shoots flames but i mean i wouldnt complain about that

Next time you've got it in the air, smack the cat with your fist a couple of times, if it rattles...replace it. If you're putting a cat-back system on, remove the cat at that time and hold it up to a light, you should faintly be able to see light through it. If you can't, or if you can see right through it.....replace it. If replacing it...go with a high flow cat from Carsound.
