Do I need to modify the suspension for 16" or 17" wheels?

664 Views 8 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Freckmoto
I'm planning on purchasing the 2002 Passat 1.8T and replacing the wheels with 16" or 17" wheels. Do I need to make ANY modifications to the car??
thx in advance!

Nope, as long as you get wheels with the correct offset (37mm or less). However, when you go into 17" territory, the gap between the fender and the tire gets noticably annoying -- click on my sig to see pics of 17" tires/rims on stock suspension.
Enjoy!

thx for the info.
I like the Capezio 17", what would you recommend I do for the gap? any other mods necessary? and will my passat perform better with the 17" wheels?
thx!

With a 17" wheel, you usually have to mount tires that are in the 215-235 range (i.e., 225/45-17), which already offer a vast improvement in handling over the stock 195/65-15 tires/rims that come stock with the car. So the first thing you'll notice is the improved grip in turns (probably with a slight decrease in fuel efficiency in turn).
As far as removing the fender gap? You'll have to lower the car. Sorry.
There are some springs out there that lower it just enough to make the gap less noticable, but without "slamming" the car down. An added benefit is that these springs are usually stiffer as well, also improving handling. The downside is that the ride is harsher, which may or may not be okay with you. Also, you'll want to get new shocks while you're at it, since the OEM shocks really aren't designed for the stiffer springs/lowered height, and will tend to wear out faster.
As you can see, the amount of money you spend on mods quickly starts to add up.
Lock your wallet away now...

P.S.- The B5.5 you see below with the Capezios is lowered slightly, by about an inch or 1.5" or so.

225/45/17 is the correct *fitment* to replace the stock 15" wheels...not 16" as
you mention...16" is Standard only on the GLX.
The profile of your Passat will remain exactly as it is...
