I've heard stories that if you're a cop (or were a cop) and you get pulled over for speeding, you pretty much get let off every time. Is this true?
A buddy of mine tells a story that he used to work for the local police department, and he had a pin he wore on his lapel from the department; he always wore it. He claims he was pulled over a number of times, and every time the officer saw the pin and let him go. Most times, they'd walk to the window, turn around and walk back to their car. Once, an officer asked him questions about what he did and they chatted for a few minutes before he was let go.
Is this just rumor?

Re: Do police officers ever get speeding tickets? (jackr)

of course they do... The judge who reemed me out for 101 in a 55, in a 77 turbo carrera, was explaining how he got a ticket, and had to pay it.... They definately get MORE BREAKS, since they have the FOP sticker, and they can just say their a cop, they get off alot

Along the same lines, I've heard it's a waste of time to give to the FOP and such just to get the stickers. Apparently cops don't take that into account because they all have different unions.

I see the police driving like pure crap all the time.
Speeding w/o emergency lights on, not signaling during regular traffic lane changes or turns to name a few.
I also see meter maids parked all over the place, not in spots, double parked, parked on corners etc. Where are the people to give them tickets?

FOP isn't really a union. And to answer the original question, yes they do.
If you want to at least try to get out of a ticket, when you get pulled over, immediately put your hands up above the steering wheel on the dash with your fingers apart and up, to show that you have nothing in your hands. It just puts them at ease a little. Also, those of you who carry, roll down your window and stick your hands out the window. If the officer is good, he'll ask why and you need to immediately let them know that you have a weapon. It just keeps everyone aware of the situation and somewhat at ease.
It goes a long way.

Man! that sounds sooo scary!!! LOL
Here it's just a simple matter of trying to find some lame excuse to get out of it while the policeman or woman takes his or her sweet time strolling over to your car to act like a toughass.
In the UK, drivers get out of their cars and walk over to the police!

Re: Do police officers ever get speeding tickets? (jackr)

The most disgusting abuse of the law by police officers I've ever seen, was in the small town I lived in before.
I remember one cop flying by me with his lights going. He passed my up a "S" curved hill with many blind corners. I pulled over and he went by fine. As I go on my merry way and get around to a VERY blind corner the cop is backing up in the middle of the road with no emergency lights on anymore!!! The Speed Limit is 35mph and with some tricky manuvering and braking I got around him. I couldn't believe the sheer stupidity! He had the balls to then flash me a dirty look

None of the cops in town knew how to use their turn signals either. Most never even bothered to slow down to turn.
Out where I lived was a long stretch of road posted 45mph. It was not a highway however, is was not uncommon to see a cop doing 80mph down it with no lights on or anything. Yes, it was very residential, with many families and kids, pets etc etc on the street.
I feel it depends on the area. Obviously in a small town like I used to live in, it's not really "cops" more like a bunch of guys on a power trip. Where in a big city where crime actually occurs, I think the "Law" is treated with a little more respect... And therefore I do think cops can be fined, although I'm still sure they can get out of it 9 out of 10 times...

My old roommate is a cop. Local agencies typically will not give him a ticket. In fact his gf got a ticket and he called up the officer who issued the ticket to see when he is on vacation so that he could have her go to court and get out of it. However Highway Patrol doesn't give a damn who you are and will write you up.

Yeah. It's true. Minor infractions where no-one gets hurt usually don't involve tickets, but if someone does get hurt, tickets are almost a sure thing. Cops will usually give ems and fire-fighters a bit more lee-way than most out of respect.

I would think cops don't get ticketed ever. I have a friend in the Marines who frequently travels between Jersey City and Central Jersey (about an hour drive) on the NJ Turnpike.. If he drives at night when no traffic is around he wll hit 95 mph. He has been pulled over a few times and in all instances as soon as they saw his marines ID they've let him go. Can't say its a sure thing but he seems to think it is.

quote:

Absolutely TRUE

Cops in the NY/NJ area never obey most traffic laws, they run traffic lights without and silen or flashing lights.
Police is like a Big fraternity, they would never turn in one of their one. It looks bad on the officer arresting or issuing ticket and thus would be segregated.
If you are a cop and your family members get pulled over in the town that you work, they'll rarely get a ticket.
Also most cops rarely give tickets to EMS workers, cause they are afraid that if they get shot the first person to help them are the EMS. So they respect that.
the ONLY time I actually heard of a cop geting in hotwaters is, if the cop drives DRUNK and gets into an accident, then they get in hot waters. If the cop is drunk and gets pulled over, the cop won't get arrested instead they'll call him a cab.
Cops always look out for their fellow officers, even in different states. It's the only perk for a low salary job!!!

that is so true my brother-in-law is a ranking offiser in a local PD. I was invited to his B-party 4 days befor the wedding.. They rented a chevy 15 passanger van.. We were drinking in the car had a big cooler.. and driveing from strip bar to strip bar.. 8 other people in the van were also PO's from the same force. We got pulled over.. cop though he won the prize for the night.. untill the badges came out.. and he just got back in his car and left.

Re: Do police officers ever get speeding tickets? (VWVancouver)

While it kinda sucks that cops may get out of tickets easier while in their own cars, just for being a cop.
I hate even more, the type of stuff they pull when their in their cop car, and figure they can cause they're a cop.
I live 2 miles from a decent sized park. Throughout the park, the speed limit is 25. They have those signs up all the time that display your speed. Cops are CONSTANTLY pulling people over. In the summer, most of the people they pull over are younger kids, and they always seem to be giving the kids a hard time.
Yet, I'm ALWAYS seeing the cops flying through the park going at least 50. Never with lights on. Never chasing anyone. I've seen them fly through the park light that, and then just pull into a parking lot and sit, so they can catch other speeders.
There's also a parking lot. It's kind of a loop, separated with jersey barriers. Each side is a one way drive, and you can't make U-Turns at either end (although, everyone does). The cops are always busting kids for making the U-turns. But I see the cops do it daily.
I also hate it when you see a cop turn on his lights and go through red lights, just to turn them off once he's through, and continue to go at a normal rate of speed. Obviously, not on a chase. Just wanted through the light.
