JUST GOT IT. DISREGUARD THIS THREAD
im having major trouble getting my steering column off so i can replace my ignition housing. i tried using my pep-boys puller to no avail. do you have to use the VW Tool (Assenmacher 204-2 VW Steering Wheel Adapter Puller) http://www.handsontools.com/As....html or is there another way to do it???

Go to any AutoZone Store and borrow a "PosiLock" tool to remove the steering column collar. It's basically a three jaw puller with a collar that keeps the jaws from spreading under pressure and coming off the collar when you're tightening the pressure screw to force the collar off.
The deposit is the highest I've ever seen (about $125), but you just need the tool for a few minutes. Make sure that the tool is not already broken, before you pay the deposit.

ok good look. the one thread is what im looking for. the other thread is just for the switch. im replacing the housing, cyclinder and switch

just got it with the vice grip and cheap puller tool method

Yo eff that noise. I just pull the entire column and use a tiny screwdriver to get the set screw out. Takes 20 minutes tops.

Just did it this way myself. Pulled the column. Only hard part is pushing the shaft back into the u-joint against the spring by yourself

Other than that a quick job.

steering column

how do you put a 96 vw golf steering column together? is there a large or small spring that goes between the shaft and the Ujoint? also having troubles lining the entire interior column up correctly so that I can put my collar and steering wheel on. I bought a wrecked vw golf and starting building it from bottom up so it didnt have anything in it before I got it.
