Does a 16" alloy fit in Jetta Wagon Spare Wheel Well?

I have a 2002 Jetta IV Wagon and I run 15" Avus' in the winter and 16" Montréal Is in the summer.
It doesn't look like the 16" wheel will fit in my spare wheel well. The Avus came with my car from the factory.
I figure there's got to be room in there since VW sells OEM 16" alloys on the wagon and they give you a 16" steelie as a spare. There's some sort of curved plastic bin welded to the frame that may need to be removed or replaced. Does anyone have experience with this issue?
I'll check with my local VW parts shop this week and let people know what I find...

Even the 17" Alloys fit in the spare wheel well (I put mine there when I took my 16" steelie out after a flat in my 17).
