does a 1997 Jetta GL have remote locking like the 98???

It's a strange thing....my understanding is that some did and some didn't...for the most part the 97 GL's have the central locking system...and did not come with the keyless entry option.

I have remote locking on my 98 GL but on my parnets old 97 GLS didnt have it. I didnt think anything below 98 had remote locking.

correct me if I'm wrong but if it has power locks and doesn't have remote locking I can just add the module?

no, the ones pre 98 w/o the remote keyless arent able to be coded correctly to the 98+ remotes, so you would need pre 98 remotes, which dont exist.

Theres no reason I can't install an aftermarket alarm and hook into the lock system, is there?

you can do that or buy a keyless entry system from a 98, but w/ the aftermarket alarm, you can make ti do a lot more cool ish
