Well, if you include 1984, I still have the original engine in my GLI.
tt stainless exhaust, euro ex. manifold, "g" cam. Pulls strong up to 100.
186k miles. I think I went from 90hp to 105hp. When I had to replace the distributor, it felt like I gained an extra 10hp. It has run even stronger since.
about the ABA swap Why don't you just do 2L 16V from a Passat/GTI/GLI? It isn't that much more effort and they are roughly similar in price once you factor in the mods you'd need to do to the ABA to get some more ponies.

I have the stock 1.7 in my Convertible. It is still very slow. It has TT race downpipe and 2 1/4" SS piping. It pulls strong to about 10. It will be replaced soon though

So far every A1 I have owned has had it's original stock motor. That's a real tribute to VW enginering if you ask me. Mind you they didn't have really high mileage, in fact the present Scirocco has the highest mileage of any of them when I bought it at 208,000km, not bad for 20years old. If has good power and compression and it does use some oil but is improveing. Being that it is the 1.7L with the really small cam, I have a plan for a bit of a bump. So far it has a ported intake with a Audi/Golf TB and next will be a 1600 cam so it will actually rev past 6000 rpm. My old 1600 with that same stuff would pull to 7000rpm in 1st and 2nd. I also have a Supersprint street header to replace the dual downpipe and stock dual outlet euro style cast exhaust manifold. I know some people like those but they are stock for us so the header should be better.
That should be fun for awhile until I get bored and sell the car. I don't want to spend to much on it as I have my eye on another 'roc and I have my 2.0L 3A waiting in the wings.

I still have the original 1.7 in my Jetta. Its got even compression, runs awesome and pulls pretty hard with the exhaust.
Since it can beat a 1.8 off the line, Im thinkin it needs a throttle body and a g grind cam....
Not bad for 285,000 k! Very impressed..

Forgot to add my motor has over 250,000 miles on it and will rev to 8000rpm, even though it makes no power over 5000rpm. I have pulled off 2.4 second 60 foot times though which is not too bad.

Hey A1rocco, can I have your exhaust mani and dual outlet downpipe blahbitty blah blah blah..... agh. Anyway can I call dibs on that stuff once you get the header on?

I still have the original motor & tranny in my '83 GTI. It has ~250,000kms and still runs strong. Only mods have been 4-to-1 header, no cat, TT 2-1/4" exhaust. It dyno'ed 84hp and 98ft-lb torque to the wheels on a Dynojet 248C. Not bad for an engine with almost 20yrs of abuse huh?

I have the stock 1.8 8V in mine just replaced the head, the new one has 54,000 miles on it and purrs like a kitten, but to slow for my liking. Runs in perfect condition though so I will keep it for a while, until I build up the $$$ to put the 16V in.
No mods on the 8V by the way, except for the HUGE hole in the muffler, that came with time http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

my original 1.8 has about 150K, and it pulls strong and has tolerated a bunch of engine mods. cam, ported intake and bigger tb, euro injection, euro exh manifold and dp, and 2" tt exhaust. doesn't leak oil either. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Building a 1.8l for my '84 GTi right now. Blueprinted and balanced, 286 cam, tri-y header, RD pistons (10:1), Audi TB, all port matched, SS valves with 5 angle, lightened flywheel , and p+p, HD valve springs. I can let you know next month when I get it in the car.
