Hi All, my parents have a 91 Passat GL with a 2.0 16V and an automatic transmission. I have not driven the car much in the last year or two but when I drive it to work the other day it really seemed to shift hard especially from 3rd to 4th. It almost feels like the motor mounts are all broken. I have done the mount test and the engine hardly lifts up front or rear. Maybe the side mount? Is there a way to test this? Anyway, the harsh shifting is a bit annoying and I don't know if it is because I am used to driving different cars (ie. Mercedes 190E, Jetta GLX). The car has 101K and had a VW rebuilt tranny at 70K five years ago. New front motor mount 6 months ago. And the car is chipped, if that makes a difference. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Re: Does the B3 Automatic Normally Shift Hard? (vwsickness)

Clear out the shift computer. You'll see a huge difference.
Procedure:
1) Turn engine off.
2) Push gas pedal to floor.. must engage the full throttle switch.
3) Turn key on but do not start the car.
4) Count to 12.
5) Take your foot off the gas.
6) Start the car. Do not turn the key off before starting. Just turn Clockwise from the "On" position.
Your car will now drive like your grandmother had it the whole time. Nearly imperceptible shifts.. early upshifts, etc.

Re: Does the B3 Automatic Normally Shift Hard? (WannaCorrado)

I am going to try that with mine later today. My B3 has been in the shop for 4 months just because after the rebuild the tranny was still shifting hard. I pray that it works cause after just spending $800 on my front end I would like to have a smooth rolling car.
$800 in parts gave me...

As WannaCorrado mentioned, this will only work if you do NOT have the Sport/Economy switch. Good luck.
Start saving about $3k for a manual conversion. That tranny WILL die sooner or later.
