Door Lock Question....

Was talking to the guy who did my tint and he told me that the door locks are not electrical but vacuum actuated and that in order for him to install an aftermarket alarm system he would have to install door lock actuators in each door. Does anyone know if this is true?
I'm not considering an aftermarket alarm but would like to know if my alarm guy is F.O.S.

He is correct that they are vacumm actuated. but it depend on the allarm system you are installing. Some will require that you get actuators, others tap into the wireing harness (because it still has a electric current that tells it to unlock)

Where does the vacuum come from when the car is off?

if they are vacume, I would assume there is a storage tank similar to the one that holds vacume for you pwr brakes while it is idle.

Are you sure they're vaccum? My B3 and my Mercedes had vaccum power locks, and they act nothing like the locks in our B5. Usually in vaccum locks, not all of the knobs go down at the same time, and they're usually quiet (but you do hear the a pump going off in the trunk)

Hey, I was just curious and serious. Why are you getting an aftermarket alarm (other than the obvious). Just wondering if I should be getting one and if I am missing something.

Why? What if someone wants the "shake sensor" or "sound sensor", etc.?

I personally DO NOT want another alarm in my Passat. I am very happy with the factroy stuff, I was simply having a conversation about alarms and the "what if.." topic came up. The only other thing I would like is auto-start.

Well I don't know about your B5 Passats, but in mine, the door lock actuators are ELECTRIC, not vacuum-operated.
I've had cars with vacuum locks before. This ain't one of them.

Because the second, aftermarket, will conflict with the Factory System...
I had an F&I guy selling aftermarket alarms for awhile, caused problems
galore...
Motion sensors & Vibration sensors also are the cause of all *False Alarms*
that tend to make the alarm go off for no apparent reason, and P*** Off
your neighbors...
