HI im a new member to the Vortex forums. i just totalled my 87 auto-x cabriolet on thanksgiving and am looking to buy
an A2 jetta. I am new to A2 cars so i need help. which fuel systems came on jettas, which ones are bad/good and on
which specific models/years can i find them. also, what trim models are offered, what engines are available , Are GLi's reliable ?
are GL's quick . what kind of 5-speed transmissions do they offer. ( my 9a 020 on my cabby was a tranny that most shops called
"unserviceable" ) do the A2's have 9a's ? ( i hope not )
What are some of the common problems with A2's , what dont you like about your Jetta. do i want a 2dr or 4 dr or is there no
difference ( besides the obvious ) . Do the motor mounts break every month like A1's . what can you compare the handling to?
how is the gas mileage, how well do they do in accidents.( my cabby was excelent).
Dang that was a lot of questions. i am pretty sure i will buy an a2 jetta , i just want to research a little more first.
thanks in advance.

Re: "Drivers Wanted" but first i need a little info. (TRYNTRUEA2)

you can get any A2 that you think will fit your price range the best. Any a2 from 85-92 will be great. Engine swaps are always easier in A2s. from 85-87 the 8v's were CIS fuel injection. A lot of people really like the CIS fuel management system but its a PITA to tune. 16vs started were introduced in 87 in the gti's. These came with rear disks. 87 is the year they dropped rear disks on the 8v gtis. Although some people say a few came with them so dont quote me on that. from 85-88 all a2's came with what is known as "small doors" which are doors similar to those of A1's..the 2piece window doors..from 89-92 they came with the "big doors" one piece window. and starting in mind 1990...A2s came out with big bumpers and door moldings and thick wheel arches. the 1990-1992 gti's came out with even wider wheel arches which are known as the 16v/g60 arches..both are the same. as far as engines and all..it really is up to you. depends on what you're looking for. I personally own an 86 gti. it looks like a 90spec because all the parts are bolt on..doors..bumpers..flares...and i have a 1995 2.0 8v motor which is known as a crossflow in my car and it bolted rite up. like i said..its really your preferance and where you plan on going with this car. A2s with a good suspension setup and sway bars and strut bars will handle VERY VERY good. go with coilovers at first..dont waste your money on strut/spring combo because in the end..for a few extra hundred bucks you could have bought a coilover setup, a lot of people will tell you the same. ill save the rest of the details for others.....

unserviceable? what were you trying to get them to do?
9a's came in early gti's/gli's.
fuel system i think was covered, cis on early base models, cis-e on upscales, then to digifant in 88, 16vs i know were covered.
get a bentley manual for more info.
common problems? if u had an a1, lots of the same crap.
great in accidents.

i'd recomend one of the earlier (8v) models if you're doing x-ing.. they have lots of torque (if you're going 100% stock, that's your best option)... if you compete in modified classes you might wanna consider a swap (ABA would probably be your best option) and then go wild with forced induction. even though i'm a jetta owner and i wouldnt trade my baby for anything, if you're serious about competing, you should get a golf instead. they handle much better. good luck
