Well Friday night my friend and I drove down in his 2002 GTI 1.8T from northern VA to Orlando FL. He drove to about Richmond, then decided he wanted to sleep so I drove from Richmond to Savannah Georgia. I also drove yesterday from here to the Gulf of Mexico and back....
This was my first drive in a 1.8T for the most part, and here is what I thought:
- The turbo sounds really really cool from 2500 - 4500 RPM
- There is no power under 1500 RPM, kinda annoying for second gear starts
- After 5000ish, the power is also gone
- Great pull however in the mid range
Things I did miss....climatronic, the MFA, and rain sensing wipers. If it was July 2000 and I was buying my GTI again, I honestly don't think I would have changed my mind from the VR6. It has great pull everywhere, awesome sound, and the cool features that you can't get on the 1.8T. Also, I am comparing stock to stock, if anyone says "chip it", I'm gonna flip out.

And as for this weight difference, I didn't notice a difference at all in handling.
Anyways, just thought I'd share.

Actually I'll be driving a chipped 1.8t in a few weeks, so I'll be able to give my impressions as well.
I dunno, as much as I love my VR6, I'm sick of getting 20-21MPG. :\

Haha, I didn't mean that like it came accross.

As for gas mileage, I should have mentioned that. The 1.8T does great, but on the highway in my VR6 I get 27-28 MPG all the time....
Not too much of a difference.

good review. about a year and a half ago I drove my buddy's 01 VR after deciding that my next car would be a mkIV. It made nice power and made it all the way to 6000 or so where I shifted. I wasn't really impressed and started thinkin about getting a mkIII and chargin it. Then I drove an 01 1.8T. To me it felt alot more nimble and it made power closer to where I was used to coming from a modded 93 5-litre Mustang. Plus, I knew that I could get alot more tourque with a chip.
I decided at that point that the GTi 1.8T was gonna be my next car. Now that I have it chipped and awaiting the TT turbo-back it's alot of fun.
