My GF is thinking of getting a jetta within a year. So we went to the dealership to drive one. I was thinking she should get a 200hp VR6 or 1.8t, but after talkin to the sales person he said the vr6 will only be available in the GLX not both GLX and GLS anymore. Well the GLX sticker was like 27,600
. So i said looks like its the 1.8t. So we took out a 02 180hp Jetta. It was an auto. I know I know.....she doesnt wanna drive stick what can i do. She knows how she just doesnt want to do it every day. So anyway back to the test drive. First impression was WOW torque....torque....torque. I have never driven the vr6 auto so i cannot compare. We didnt get the tach past about 3500, and there was no need to. After i was done driving she drove it. First thing she said to the sales guy was "Oops sorry i didnt know it would pull like that" granted she is driving a mitsubishi mirage with 90hp. But the car was very nice and had boat loads of torque way down low. She will probably get it when she is ready. She also said i like the turbo whistle...it sounds cool...hehe. So it will be a Tornado Red Jetta with Leather for about 24,500, and the GLX would be 27,600. Thats almost 3k difference
. Anyway i just wanted to share. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif to the 1.8t.

Hey, I fell for it on the test drive also. This car wasnt my first choice but it ended up being my last.

I test drove the Jetta 1.8t twice. Really loved it!! http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif I hope to have a deal done by the end of the week. Biggest decision was what color to get. It was between black on black leather interior, and the Galatic blue with either black or tan leather interior. Right now it is Galatic Blue with Black Leather, that might change though.

Yeah I didn't have the 1.8T Jetta as my first choice either, wanted a rave green GTI. I drove the 1.8T Jetta, 5-spd and absolutely loved it, lot's of useable torque down low, where I do most driving. The decision however came down to interiors, and I was not budging over $20,100 OTD, which mind you I had on a velour int 1.8T 5/spd, no monsoon, no luxury pkg. Oddly enough the dealer had a loaded black GLS Jetta monsoon, lux, multifunction wheel ect... 2.0L 5-spd and best of all the interior shod in beige leather ahhhh! drove it, not fast but plenty of torque down low, being it did not feel sluggish.

Today we have nice weather in NJ so I go today for test drive to.I take for test GTI 1.8T Tiptronic.I have to say that it's a nice car and fast but I thought that is better than my VR6 auto.It is slow when taking off ,much slower than my VR6 auto. GTI 1.8T is much louder than my VR6 and I have to rev engine over 3000 rpm to pull fast and hard.On paper torque numbers on 1.8T looks very good but on the road VR6 pull much better, even with my 4 spd automatic tranny. Also I hear rattles in GTI when taking car for test drive. My Jetta is rattles free.I though that 1.8T is much better on the road than VR6.Both engines are great but I like better my VR6 auto right now.I think that my next car will be a VW with 1.8T because they cost much less than current VR6 cars.

The '02 1.8t blows away the 174-hp VR6, especially if the VR6 is an auto!

Sounds like MY wife!
Seriously . . . ordered my GLS 1.8t November 1st and it should be here this month. Only this last week has the dealer gotten a GLS 1.8t 5spd. I have yet to test drive one. Hope to test drive it next week and if it is what I think it will be, then I'll have one of my own the week after that.

Lets not let things go to our heads. A WS6 firebird will blow a vr6 away, not a stock 02 1.8t. The new 1.8t will probably inch past the 174hp vr6, but that all depends on the driver.

Is this really necessary? My brother has a 72 Dodge Dart 340 with a 6-pac that would hand us all our asses. Who cares?

hey ken1.8t! what are you some type of lamo trying to start another war? What type of ignorant statement was that? a 1.8t would not BLOW a 174 hp vr6 away. I raced my dealer, him in tip 1.8t (broken in btw) and me with my 4spd auto vr6. I pulled a little in front of him ALL the time, at all speeds, except at high rpms he inched closer. But its overall a VERY close race.
