Guys,
How much of a PITA job is it to replace the wheel cylinders? I hear that if you don't have to touch them...then leave them alone BUT If I am going to be doing shoes....well, why not do bearings and cylinders?...they are fairly inexpensive! I guess that I am just looking for some different opinions and insight on this? Thanks...

Re: Drums, shoes, bearings, and wheel cylinders.... (john green)

Replacing the wheel cylinder is not hard. What is a PITA is when the brake line attached to the wheel cylinder is siezed up. I would not replace the cylinder unless you suspected it was faulty. Saves the headach of a possible brake line replacement. Even when the corect tools are used does not garantee that the line will come off.

If your are doing drums then replace the bearings.
If the wheel cylinders are old or the brake fluid hasn't been changed regularly then replace the cylinders aswell, as the shoes wear the pistons move out (that is due to the self adjusting mechanism), as a result the corrosion in the cylinder (behind the piston with worn shoes) becomes the area the seal runs on with new shoes, they then leak.
Also, I would change the ebrake cables, they're cheap and easy to fit, if the cables arn't good you could have a poor ebrake, which after doing all that work would be a bit of a shame.
