A turbo was a big deal in 1987. I love how they covered the steering wheel and seats... with big TURBO lettering!
Those wheels don't look original. Are they?
But I love the angular boxy side profile of this car.

I had an 86 Colt Turbo GTS *sister to the Mirage* and I can say without a doubt that those seats are stock. Fun, reliable, quick little car. I miss mine terribly.

There can't be many left in that condition, or at all for that matter! Those little '80s turbo economy cars were beaten and left for dead. I would totally drive that thing!

^ 165/70/13 Tires.

I know, right? I "upgraded" to 185/70-13 A-008s. Went through a set a year. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
I also loved those responsible 0-50 times of the mid-80s.

Re: (megaDan)

The national speed limit was 55, so publishing 0-60 times was a bit irresponsible. It also looked better on paper "5.7 seconds" sounded better than the 8.0 seconds it took to get to 60.
There was a cable-operated stick just to the left of the shifter. It was basically a hi-lo range. (economy/power is what they called it) Think of it as being like a 10-speed. You couldn't really use all 10 gears in a row, but you could try. I liked dumping the clutch in 2nd low, then flicking the stick to high, then spreading my hand wide to push both levers forward into 3rd low, and then using 3rd high.
Don't know if all that was really necessary, but at 17yo, I thought it kept the boost up to use that many ratios so close together, and was pretty damn cool. Having two reverses was kinda silly, but neat.
Here's the one I had:

And a photo I grabbed from the web:

Interesting stuff

Awesome! Thanks for the write up! I kinda figured it was speed limit related but that is all well before my time. Oh how I love outdated quirky 80's tech!

These cars are big, bad fun. I had the third-generation car...and boy do I miss that. You could pretty much eat GTI 16Vs for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and the GTI 16V was a fine car in its day.
OldsPowered has one like the one for sale on eBay, minus the mismatched taillights. I'll have to shoot him a note.

Holy mother of God!!! My red 87 Mirage Turbo was my first new car and I had the wheels in the second photo (the black Mirage) however, they were optional. Black steel wheels were standard with chrome trim rings.
Man I loved that car....traded it in for a new 91 Sentra SE-R which was better in every way except it just did not have that 'soul' that the Mirage Turbo did. While it was never as popular as a GTI in its day, you would still see them around. Now, I haven't seen one in about 10 years.

OH yeah!!
I had an 85 Mirage Turbo. I absolutely loved that car!!

I rigged up a foam filter and had a Supertrapp muffler on it.
Came standard with Yoko A008's! Had these cool Enkei black mesh wheels.
Me and my roomie with an Omni GLH would race each other, every time I would beat him bythismuch.
Some of the cars pictured above are the prev gen....this car was MUCH better! No twin stick bs.
