i got a neuspeed P-flow for $50 on the classifieds

There are 2 issues...
1. THe MAF size is smaller on the TDI
2. The vacuum hose coming out of the TDI airbox is way too small for the secondary air injection coupling.
So you'll have to spend money to adapt.

Your gotta love all the positive feedback on vortex.
At least you got some initiative and did a little project.
Too bad the filter is green though

given the choice... I'd take blue. But the local shop had Green Filters that fit my size.
Apparently, it is a 2-stage filter and used by PSA Motorsports.

No! My GF's TDI has super clean engine bay!
Speaking of clean engine bays, here is mine after 30 min with Simple Green and the water hose:

... and that is a 1999.5 model!

nope, mines acutally cleaner then my minivan, alot cleaner, and the minivan is 4 years older.....and i rarely wash it, i think ive washed it three times since i got it.
anywho, props to you for trying to make something work for a TDI....if i were you i would have got a K&N air filter, smooth out the airbox, and replace the stock feed tube going to the airbox with some 3" flex tube of any style, such as dryer vent, or you can get more expensive stuff that extreamly smooth on the inside even around the corner, i think its some water suction hose....
