Elon Musk publicly announced his support for VW CEO Herbert Diess on Tuesday.

The Tesla CEO referenced VW's push toward electric cars when complimenting Diess for his work in helping protect the environment.

Herbert Diess is doing more than any big carmaker to go electric. The good of the world should come first. For what it’s worth, he has my support.

D iess, along with other VW staff, is facing charges of stock manipulation . The allegations are related to the pre-Diess dieselgate scandal--which itself was the cause of VW's decision to design and produce an EV-only chassis.

It is worth noting here, though, that Musk has had his own issues with prosecutors over his own alleged attempts to manipulate stock prices.

The twitter-happy CEO was investigated by the Securities and Exchanges Commission following a tweet in which Musk said he was considering taking Tesla private with an IPO of $420. Although he argued that it was simply a joke, he and the SEC agreed to a settlement this spring that, among other things, required his social media interactions to be overseen by a securities lawyer.

In a statement , VW said that its own, independent investigation did not find that shareholders were misled.

Meanwhile, Jurgen Stackmann, VW brand board member for sales and aftersales, has taken to Twitter to thank Elon Musk for his support.

. @elonmusk ...nothing to add. Thanks for your support, Elon! https://t.co/Slgky1sheJ
