okay folks, what exactly happens to your engine when your drive your car say, 15000 miles before changing the oil?
and if you are wondering who doesnt believe in oil changes, i'll present my dad as an example. he gets mad at me for changing oil in his nissan at about 10000 miles (or every couple of months) citing reasons that it makes no difference, the engine runs fine without doing it at the regular time interval and that its a gimmic to make ppl spend money.
as idoitic as he is for once driving our 95 maxima for 35000 miles without an oil change, the VQ engine inside is still running fine at 169,000 miles on it. maybe not making as much power as it once did, due to old age, or my bad senses, but its got the same smoothness it had at 100,000 miles.

15K might be extreem, but then again so is changing oil every 2K.

The oil gets really thick and gooey after all the constant temperature changes.
Damn, 10000 miles, I wouldn't ever consider going 10000kms without an oil change at 5000-7500kms.

personally, im cool with whenever the oil has become loaded with carbon deposits and is black like pen ink. that means that the oil isn't doing its function to lubricate the engine, and is merely spreading the crap throughout the engine. this usually happens to my family's cars at about 9-10K which is when i go and get it changed.

I changed the oil in my old car (86 Dodge 600 convertible) last march, then about two months later gave it to my sisters when I bought my GTI. They NEVER had the oil changed, so I did it about a month ago before we stored it for the winter. good lord, it was like black water. It had almost no viscosity left in it at all. After starting the car back up with the new oil I could INSTANTLY tell a difference. good grief!

Maybe the oil passages to the top end get clogged with sludge and the cam seizes. Maybe some accelerated engine wear. Maybe major engine failure. At least oil leaks won't be a problem.

Sheer genius - obviously it's fine because it still runs. By the same logic, I can eat all of the pork rinds I want because my heart is still pumping....
I wouldn't want to see what the upper end of that engine looks like....
A few years ago we did a big project on motor oil, using a fleet of NYC cabs. We found that there was little difference in varnish and wear from going 6000 mile intervals rather than 3000 mile intervals. In other words, follow the manufacturer's intervals, and you should be fine. That said, I don't know what to make of BMW/MBz/etc service intervals that extend to 10k or until the service indicator light comes on....

I really can't believe BMW. There is no way I would let the oil that came in the engine brand new spin around in there for 10k miles. Maybe after its broken in, but not the first time around.
Of course a lot of people think its a superior engine simply because it goes 10k+ between oil changes

LOL. The one thing that works for BMW and Porsche is that they have huge oil capacities, so maybe the oil is less taxed. Still, 10k on the first fill? Yikes....

well that isnt going to help too much, since all the deposits will still be there.
also, is it true that BMW and Porsche use Mobil 1 oil? and is that designed oil designed to last 10K or not?

Corvettes use Mobil 1 also, and the service interval is every 3k. I run Mobil 1, looks almost perfect after ~4500k. It does burn a little though, as most LS1s do (PCV system dumps oil into the intake manifold to about the tune of a half quart ever 3-4k miles

i had a roommate in grad school who had a dodge sprint. he would only change the oil once a year!!! He did alot of highway driving so on the average he would change it every 25,000 miles. I told him not to be surprised if his engine bay catches on fire one day. He just laughed it off.

Haha, we've gone to about every length you can think of to mod the PCV system. I just add a little when it needs it.

I like having the catch can in my (Flame Suit on) Honda. Not that necessary however, after about 4,000 miles of driving maybe 1 pint was extracted. Oh well, it looks cool.
