My check engine light came on last night. I've been told this is very very common and that there is likely nothing wrong with the car but i was hoping that you guys could tell me a few quick checks to ensure that the car is running fine. I've check the oil level, it is fine. I've also been told to check the sensor... Where is it and how can i do that?

Take it to Autozone or nearest Canadian equivalent that has an OBD2 reader and get them to scan the codes.
