Engine Noise gets louder?

I was wondering if any of you have noticed that the newer 1.8t's are louder/more buzzy than soem of the early 1.8t's? They also feel less strong on the bottom end. Or would most of you attribute these things to my imagination?
The thing is, one of my friends bought one of the earliest 1.8t GTI's and the engine seemed really smooth and strong down low while my roomate's 2001 1.8t GTI does not feel as strong and seems louder and more buzzy. Not the quiet surge that I experienced in my friend's GTI with the early 1.8t. Anything to this?

I drove three different 1.8Ts and a TDI before I bought my WE. All of them were smooth, quiet and either late 2001 or 2002 models. If my car weren't smooth and quiet, I'd certainly make the dealer aware of any problems.

maybe a bit rough compared to the 2.0's. I had a 99.5 2.0, and the thing sounded pretty rough. 1.8T runs a bit more rough than that. But its a bigger engine with more valves and much more power. THis is expected

I have a 2002 Jetta 1.8t and I agree. I tried a Passat with a 1.8t and noticed that, like mine, the idle seemed a little loud and rough. Once started, however, both ran fine. I only have 1200 miles on it.

I don't know why you think the 2.0 is smoother then the 1,8t, cause imho it is the compete opposite. My 1.8t is really smooth, alot smoother then most 4 cylinders out there

Actually, the 1.8T is a smaller engine, and while it has more valves, the valves themselves are smaller. (not to mention that with more valves there might be more opportunity for noises and vibration from the valve train to cancel each other out).
My 1.8T runs much smoother than my 2000 2.0 did.

man i drove a 2.0, you guys must be on crack, the 2.0 was loud and buzzy as the rpm's climb.
The 3 intake valves on the 1.8T allow more air to flow with less duration and lift. This in itself should make the motor less lopey. The turbo mufflers most of the exhaust note on the 1.8T and other than the turbo whirrr, its pretty darn quiet.
Maybe your buddy is running some bad gas or throwing codes, cause my 1.8T is silky smooth all of the time..
Re: Engine Noise gets louder? (mrkrad)

So does anyone have any ideas as to what might be the problem or what might be done to alleviate the noisiness? I drove an A4 1.8t MY 2000 the other day and it was pretty loud and buzzy too compared to my friend's early 1.8t GTI. Could it be that it just needed to warm up? I'm looking to buy a particular 1.8t powered car but the buzziness concerns me. I don't want any problems later on and want a quiet car. Any thoughts?

maybe its the 30 extra in HP? hehehehe
Re: Engine Noise gets louder? (enfi)

Any thought on possibly uprated engine mounts to handle the extra power?
Re: Engine Noise gets louder? (CorradoBoi)

the only noise i have is the famous "ticking" which has been attributed to the injectors firing...i hope that is what it is if my valves are ticking already at 17000 miles i'll be pissed
Re: Engine Noise gets louder? (CorradoBoi)

not sure if i agree with u. i find the early 1.8T models to be much louder. my friend's 99 A4 was lud as hell. my old 1.8T AWD was ok loud. but my 2002 1.8T is so quiet from 3rd gear onwards.
