ok
my jetta died on me tonight again stranded
i call my dad we check for a spark, it sparks but dies
i check the trunk fuel pump and its not sucking nothing
dad got a hammer and hit the fuel tank with the pump or something
the car satrted now it ticks BAD
almost died but i got it to the mechanics
its ticking bad he took off the oil cap and its ticking louder...
he says he thinks somethign internally engine wise blew..???
o my god help!

did you check to see if all 4 of the cylinders are recieving sparks? My guess is that one of them isn't and that you've got noisy lifters. Could be a bunch of things though. Since it's at your mechanics I guess you'll be finding out soon. Fingers crossed for ya'

Is it bucking when you drive it? How is the power when you drive it. I know this may sound stupid, but check to make sure your plug wires are in the right order. I blew the bottom end on a engine and it sounded similiar to what I think your describing.

yea they all are ok...
this is like dry lifters major or something internal engine wise clacking
it just started soon as my dad hammered the fuel pump...
maybe its related? i dontknow..
god i hope shes ok.. so it must be fuel related my stalling hmm
the in tank pump i hear it when i turn the ke 1/2 way but. the trunk one i felt no sucktion no vibrting no nothing when i got someone to crank it over so maybe thats it..
odd after we hit the tank one it started. maybe something is stuck.
i justhope the engine is ok

Mine sounds like what you are describing. Like a lifter is REALLY ticking, and more often than normal. Mine is because of a lack of oil. Is it still bucking and stuff? Maybe you have 2 separate problems.

I had that happen to my Wifes old Escort, tapping like crazy (loud/bad sounding)when I started it...I shut it off right away...the shop tore it apart later..it was a piston ring that snapped and was getting pounded around
end of escort...
Best of luck Tbird...I hope its fixable, otherwise you would have to swap in a 16v to make it all better

well no. it isnt bucking... not at all
just the stalling ie no power issue it was running fine i shut it off then crank it back up starts then dies. tried 30+ times then it resulted in only cranking and cranking over and over .. then the hammer to the pump wthen it started hesitated a tad but ran..
maybe it is a lifter yea... but its never been clakcing solid like that ever and while driving.. ever ... maybe its stuck. my oil level is 3/4 full

Fill up your oil man! Put some Lucas Oil Treatment in it. My noise is definitley a CLACK. When driving it kinda sounds like a bicycle with a baseball card flapping in the spokes.
I'm glad I don't have a ring flying around! I don't have any blowby and it's obvious the noise is coming from right under the valve cover. New lifters are on the way. Maybe a new cam. I'm going to do a compression test for fun since my brother has all the equipment to do it. This sucks though, I just forked out mass money for suspension (stuff I WANTED) and now I don't have squat to pay for what I NEED.

you know.. my car is 1992 not even a gl. just bone stock... its clean but bone stock. not one mod. ive forked over 6000+++ over the peast 3 yrs into this car to keep it running. now 3 months ago my reverse gear chipped. now this.. i dont see it ever ending. i can take a repair at a time slowly etc but not something big like this at once. if its lifters thats fine so long as the engine is dead or soemthing big time. il get new ones installed right away.. i wont let this car die... ill max out every card i have if i have to but i wil not let her die..
im just in shock i sit here and think whats going on... i have almost about 150,000 miles .. not like thats a wack of a lot.. its just one thing after another. when i was stranded for 1 hr last night sitting there cranking i just look around me, think back all the fun times i had driving and places i had been sigh.. i just cant let her die

Yeah you are so upside down (put in more money than you could ever get out) with your car you can't let it die now!
If I ever got a repair estimate that was over 2500 and the car was not drivable I'd part it out. And if that happened I'd be out of the VW scene for good. Farvergnugen is only worth so much IMO.

say i scraped it?
um ill be out how much 11000? if it was ok i could sell for maybe 5000? but i cant. so.. and repairs 6000+ so.. um yea
this is nuts. and i dont even boot on the c ar i frekin baby it. i dont redline, i dont do outrageous stuff i dont over rev it , drive slow when cold, regular oil changes always i dont drive it hard EVER and look what happens

runing 100% a-ok
he said the ticking is lifters huh
i dunno why they suddenly went bad i guess ill need to replace them hmmmm
i dont understand how it can die and work then die and work

tbird, you should tell your dad to take it easy with the percussion wrench (hammer) around the car.
you think a bone stock jetta is expensive? go buy a 16V....then you will know what poor and frustration is. and for some reason you find yourself pouring cash into the car because of one simple reason, when a 16V runs right, there is nothing else like it. i guess its kinda like a drug. i bought the car had no f'ing clue about motors and know i sit around all day thinking about what im going to do with all my summer job money on my car.
i have never encountered something that i have hated and liked so much at the same time.
god i love/hate my 16V.

Um, this discussion kinda went all over the place -
The last time my Jetta died on me:
It would crank without starting - then if it ran it would run for about 10 minutes then turn off completely for about 12 hours.
Here's my suggestion:
Tell the mechanic to test the distributor - hall sender.
It seemed the plugs were firing---sometimes. It was probably just enough spark to keep the engine turning.
Oh, and the ticking is normal - happens here too.

yes
we checked for spark and at times it did and others it didnt.
exactly that
the mechanic said the cap was worn, he replaced the rotor and cap and it says it seems fine
and then it died on me.
when it died it was getting spark so then no fuel...
maybe it is the hall sender hmhmhmhmh
ill tell him this guy seems incompetant
