Look for an alh instead. You’re on your own for an adapter, but you can look up info in the Toyota truck forums since those guys frequently swap them in. My coworker did a 1.6 and said he wouldn’t waste his time with those, the alh is a way better starting point.

I think the bolt pattern is all the same on the diesels, at least that’s what I’ve heard. Saying a turbo won’t work isn’t really an accurate statement, since you can match the turbo to the desired rpm range. Talk to a turbo specialist shop and they can even setup up with a turbo that comes into boost at whatever rpm you specify.

I have no clue on Toyota's but what you guys are saying is that a VW engine will bolt up to the Toyota transmission AND bolt up to the Toyota body? If so, that is odd.
No. He’s wondering if the vw bolt patterns are all the same. The Toyota bellhousing pattern is definitely not the same as vw.

Haha! On those old tercels, the engine sits longitudinally but it’s got a funky transaxle bolted to it, plus a transfer gear in the 4wd versions. Based on the initial post, it would appear that the intent is to adapt a diesel vw engine onto the transaxle.

Yeah exactly…a big laggy turbo would achieve the opposite effect as desired. Gotta make the turbo work with the rpm range and power band of the engine, not just grab the cheapest Cummins Holset off Craigslist and hope it works
