Re: engine (volkswagon)

Dead cylinder...do you mean no spark to the # 4 cylinder? If you suspect no spark then it's the spark plug or the wire. Pull the plug, hook it up to the wire and ground it (NOT with your hands). Then turn over the motor and look for spark at the plug electrodes. This tests the plug. If you see no spark then it's probably the wire. You can either switch wires and see if it sparks or re-install the plug, start the motor and pull the plug wire in question. Again you may need a special insulated wire pulling tool to minimize the risk of getting shocked. In any case, if the tone/RPM of the motor doesn't change when you pull the wire then the wire is bad. If you aren't getting spark to a cylinder for either of these reasons you should know it. The engine will run rough as you are basically pulling a cylinder along and the motor is off balance. This happened to a friend of mine's Toyota Corolla. I got the wire from a friend of mine (Dave George of Volksdoktor in Louisville KY) for next to nothing...Problem solved. Hope this helps. Good luck
