Be aware that a4 VWs with 15" wheels specify tires with a 91 load rating

Is this correct? Your web site seems to list tires with lower ratings for MkIVs.
Load ratings would be a great addition to the FAQs.

Re: Eric - Load rating for VWs? (dennisgli)

No response from Eric.
Does anyone else know if load ratings under 91 are unsafe for a MkIV? If so, why does Tire Rack list them?

Re: Eric - Load rating for VWs? (dennisgli)

Well I got this - Golf/Jetta IV Tire and Wheel Sizes - mainly from the Bentley manual. But I'm still curious if MkIVs need 91 tires. Tire Rack seems to list tires with an 89 load rating - so I don't know whether to believe that I need 91 - or is it just that VW supplies 91 as the OEM tires?

Re: Eric - Load rating for VWs? (dennisgli)

Short Answer: No a 91 load index is not required for your VW.
Long Explanation: In reference to P metric tires, the maximum load carrying capacity is achieved at 35 psi [exception - XL (xtra load rated), tire]. Additional air pressure put into the tire, does not give additional load carrying capacity.
The Service description on a tire has the Load index and the speed rating together. If we know that we have a tire with a 91 load index then @ 35psi the tires carrying capacity is, 1356 lbs of carrying capacity. Does anyone have a VW with a placard on the vehicle that stipulates 35 psi as the recommended tire pressure for their vehicle? Ok, before some smarty pants responds, I'm excluding W8, Eurovan & Touareg.
The R32 is AWD thus a "bit" heavier. They run on 88 load index tires.
Service description, load index and just about anything that you want to know about a particular tire is listed for that particular tire at The Tire Rack

Re: Eric - Load rating for VWs? ([email protected])

See, now you made me go out and look at the sticker on the car! (Didn't think of that before - the owner's manual said nothing helpful.) It says the maximum load is 925 - so does that mean a load rating of 78 or better is OK for the tires?
Eric, thanks for your help, as always.
