I read somewhere that the Euro Bumpers do not meet U.S safety standards.. does this mean they are not legal or what?? Why are they not as safe as the u.s specs??
quote:

I think the euro bumpers meet a 3 mph standard (5 kph)
and you guys need to pass a 5 mph standard.
I think?

yep...but most cars built today do not pass this test as evident by all of the hoopla surrounding the NHTSA's bumper basher tests. So don't be worried at all.
Yeah well the euro bumpers are shorter because there is less behind them. In NA we have big bumpers because there is more support behind it for greater saftey in slow speed accidents. If you've ever held a euro rad support and bumper rebar in your hand as opposed to NA stuff, you'd see why.
The WHOLE point of 5 mph bumpers vs 3 mph one's is that it makes a huge difference in damage resulting from some no-mind bumping into your car at the mall. One will leave you with nothing more than a scuff or cracked paint.
The other has you come back to your bumper split open like a banana.
So any firsthand experience with eurobumpers? OE and Italian. I'm not so worried about high speed wrecks, that why I got an airbag. But I do worry about the whole splitting like a banana thing.
Naw b, unless you find a way to split a vwatom I think your ok. These are minimum speed requirments, I think when the speed is increased the result is reletive versus the damage differece increasing exponentially.
PS YOUR OK....
