Admittedly I haven't had the car apart much (yet) but am trying to install Euro headlamps and turn signals on an '88 16v. Before I get in too deep, are any modifications required to the turn signal socket? In other words, will the US socket just plug into the Euro socket?
It's currently a 2-wire setup which probably means that it's for a turn signal only and thus NOT a marker light/turn signal.
that is right. the plug just plugs right into both the american style and euro style.
i rewired mine, so my runing lights are the ones in the headlights, and no amber signals. i painted the bulbs red, and it looks sweeeeet when i cruise at dusk with the running lights on.
good luck.

Great - thanks for the clarification.
I'm just upgrading the headlights b/c the US-spec lights are simply terrible. I figure I'll wire-up the city-lights with the parking lamps b/c I think they look nice but I'll keep everything else stock since it's less of a hassle to pass VA's annual "safety" inspection.

Don't forget to run proper relays for the lights. The wiring harness for the US lights isn't adequate for Euro lights.

Not that I really disagree, but... I have the H4 conversion lights on my car. I have a set of Euro lights - with the exact same bulbs in them - sitting on the shelf. My current setup works just fine. I may install relays later, but for now, I'm installing my Euros without relays.

Yup - purchased all the electrical stuff (relays, connectors, etc) last night. Damn VW uses some fairly cheap wiring on their US cars. My BMW didn't notice when I added E-code lamps but the ole' VW will melt the switch (and probably more).
