Euro quad Install?

1085 Views 15 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  jzakGTI
Hello,
I installed a true Euro quad light grill on my GTI and now I’m blowing the 15amp high beam fuse.
It blows during prolonged use, not immediately.
Should I increase to a 20amp, or is the problem elsewhere?
Also, the grill came with the height adjustable 7” lamps. Can anyone supply me with a switch and motor wiring schematic?
Finally, where can I buy the city light lamps?
Thanks,
Jason

if your highs are blowing, make sure the wires to the inner spot lamps are taped to prevent the metal touching the metal Rad Support.
Were did you get the hight adjust 7s? are you sure that they are not just aim adjustable. I could be wrong, but Ive never heard of beam adjustment on a A2.
If you didnt get 7s w/ the holes in them for the city lamps, you can buy a adapter that works w/ all H-4 bulbs. Sorry I dont know who has them, but I would try RPI in Canada. you can reach them here.

Re: Euro quad Install? (HIDGolf)

Thanks for the link HIDGolf. I’ll give them a shout. The lamps have the preexisting holes.
The height adjustment is performed by a dial switch located in the dash, which controls a motor mounted at the lower adjustment screw on the lamp housing. I believe this option is only available across the pond.

Any other suggestions

did my suggestiongs work?
Re: Euro quad Install? (HIDGolf)

I’ll call the Jag Dealer today and let you know.
The wires going to the high beams have a heavy heat shrink type protector over them.
I replaced the 15amp fuse, but haven’t run with them on yet.
Could someone move this thread to the Golf 2 forum to see if I can get help with the Adjustable lamp situation? Thanks,
Jason
Re: Euro quad Install? (jzakGTI)

if your bulbs are under 100 watts you are fine with the 15 amp fuse
the formula for amperage is: wattage/voltage=amperage
remember that a car system runs on 13.5-14.5 volts when running, and it is usually slightly under 12 when it isn't running. I usually use 10 for voltage to give a margin of saftey (will give a higher amperage number). Also remember that you have 2 bulbs on the same circuit.
When typing this I assumed that you also installed relays and at least 14 guage wiring??? If you ran anything over 60 watts on stock wiring that is probably the problem. If you are running the high beams and the driving lights off of the same source (if your car didn't come with a 4 light grill originally and you just spliced into the high beams), that is probably your problem

That's my story

The grill came from a Jetta, (yellow, white, and brown wires), with an adapter that plugged into the 7” lamp harness sending power to the driving lights. It looks like an OE setup.

yeah, when i got 16v lamps for my 8v golf, I had no problems like this at all. I spliced w/ the provided connector (H4 w/ a ground wire and pos that ran to grill lamps. I used the stock fuses too, no problems. my lamps were stock wattages H4 55/60 and H3 55.
But while installing them, I did not wrap the connection from the h-3 to the positive for the High beam, and this connector caused the lamps to blow the fuse. Some electrical tape and a new fuse...everything was fine for almost a year, then i switched to rallye golf lamps. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

I just wanted to confirm that there were height adjustable headlights on the Golf 2, using a motor on the light and adjuster wheel on the dashboard.
Re: Euro quad Install? (PerL)

yes i know what he is talking about, just never aware VW used them so long ago. My friends MB is a graymarket '82 280 CE, and it has the 4 position light level switch on the dash.
Re: Euro quad Install? (HIDGolf)

OK, now that were on the same page about the adjustable lamps, can someone help with the hook up?

Re: Euro quad Install? (HIDGolf)

HIDGolf,
I found the City lamps at AutoZone.
Sylvania 3893 or T4A for $1.79 a pair. Wonder if I can find them in different colors?
Now back to my previous question.
Re: Euro quad Install? (jzakGTI)

yes you can get them in Red, Blue, Yellow, Green, and prob others as well. Sorry, if you are blowing you fuse with all metal connectors insulated, then I cant help you.
If you really want the colored cities, or postion lamps as we call them at Hella of NA, I would check the rice cites. Im not saying colored bulbs are rice, just thats were I remember seeing them.
Re: Euro quad Install? (HIDGolf)

The blown fuse could have been an isolated occurrence. It hasn’t happened sense.
When I travel from Ohio to Georgia and back for Christmas I’ll exercise them then.
If someone, Cullen or anyone, could please move this post to the Golf 2 forum, maybe I could get some help with my adjustable lamp situation.
Thanks,
Jason
