Everyone Read (please?!?) won't start!

ok i tok my car to oneof my friends deatil shop so i can work on my car cause the garage is heated. so i took off the distributor cap off, replaced the rotor, then took one wire off the cap at a time, but it is a possibilty i messed up the wires, where does the first cyl. wire start? i have mine at the bottom right. so i then replace the spark plugs (which the old ones were completely black from carbon?) so i then replaced the fuel filter. take it down off the jacks to race some kid in a for escort caus he actually thought he'd beat me.. and guess what, the damn thing didn't start. turned over for a while but nothing. i went and got gas. turned over for a while and got somehting that sounds like this. sorry if it doesn't make sense. turn over.....put..turnover...pop.. turn over.. put, put pop... and i let off the started and precced with the sounds of put, put put, sssssssss so in other words it's not starting at all.... so i then tried changing one of everything to find the problem till i ended up with all the old crap back on it and still nothing. so i check CCA and just saw this "Oxysensors wear out, and if they do, it usually result in a rough idle, poor engine performance and higher fuel consumptions. Besides these annoying side effects they may also cause your catalytic converter to burn up or loosen up. A broken up catalytic converter sounds like a couple of coins rattling in a coffee can." and i turned my idle up cause it was idling bad and cause my oil light to come on. and i had a rattle from my exhaust and i thought it was just it rattling a mount of something? and i wasn't getting real good gas mileage at all lately and alot of carbon? i would appreciate as much help as possible and as soon as possible since peaple will be walking around and moving car around mine all day tomorrow and i don;t really wanna leave it there but i had no choice... thanks

Re: Everyone Read (vdubCorrado)

this sucks
You need to rotate the engine to TDC#1 and then put the rotor pointing to a point on the cap. that is supposed to be #1 then its 1342
BTW #1 is usually point towards 1 O-clock when standing infront of the car
Re: Everyone Read (vdubCorrado)

Ok, I found out the firing order. 1,3,4,2 starting from 1 o'clock. Try unplugging the O2, the ECU will run with it unplugged, a little rich but it should run. There's that stuff if you are just trying to get it running.
Here are a few things that you should replace anyway:
1 meter vacuum line to the ECU (EXACTLY 1 meter)
Blue temp sensor on the neck on the front of the block (this is the temp sensor for the ECU) change the black too (which is for your gauge)
If you think the 02 sensor is bad, buy a Bosch 3-wire and check the CCA page for directions
You can do all of that for @$80 and they each can cause major probs in your idle/performance. Good luck.
Re: Everyone Read (vdubCorrado)

Most likely you got your cables mixed up also check and see if their is any condensation in the distributor cap. even the littlest bit can reap havoc on any VW. Go to AutoZone and browse through a Haynes 85-92 jetta golf manual on your wiring diagram. Get some new sparkplugs while your at it most likely you fouled them out. The next step is to check the coil mine went out at 24000. Usually with that though the car will start acting erradically and black smoke will start billowing out of the exhaust due to an incomplete burn of fuel.

Re: Everyone Read

thanks for the help maybe i can get it home. hopefuly since i missed all my classes today. i am not sure where the o2 sensor is but i'll check CCA... oh speaking of CCA how do you tell what number member you are? (doesn't really have ot be answered haha)
Re: Everyone Read (vdubCorrado)

euhm, firing order is idd 1342 but cyl 1 is topleft corner on distributor (11 'o clock)
engine @ TDC, the rotor should be a little past the Cyl 1 mark (since you're running 4-8° pre-ignition)

The O2 sensor is right b4 the cat towards the front of your exhaust system. It's harness is right behind the motor on the pass. side near the rear motor mount.

I really want to say 1 O-clock but since I will be heading to the garage today I'll see for myself. That why I told him to put the motor to TDC on #1 which is visable from a couple locations(Flywheel, Crank pulley being in the right ball park in connjuction with the cam gear's mark) If I remember I'll take a pic of this when I head outside

Re: Everyone Read (G60ING)

i tried timing orm the 11 o'clock mark last night and nothing different if any it got worse... so i guess i have to pul plug 1 out and put my finger over the hole and have someone turn over my motor and when i feel pressure through that plughole it's at TDC and then re chek the rotor and re wire the cap...
