Exhaust Mod - Fish Tank Valve

Ok, I tried the exhaust mod and thought it was cool but it was a bit loud when cruising with my wife. We talk, and it was a pain trying talk to over it. So, I had an idea. I went to a pet store and found a valve to turn on and off air flow. I installed it on the car and it is awesome. You just have to open or close the valve before you start the car to get the sound you want. Best of all, you don't have to remove the vacuum line caps or remove a clamp when you need to change the sound. Other than an electrical solution, proposed by Ian, I think this the ticket.
The stock vacuum line fits the valve and I cut the end off of the vacuum cap I bought to get a 1 inch piece of tube to connect the valve to the actuator.
The valves come in packs of 2 for $1.19. Pretty cool.

And Installed...

Whatcha think? http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif or http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif

Re: Exhaust Mod - Fish Tank Valve (ohicks)

hehe...no way! Easy. Just out of curiosity, what kind of hose did you get to attach the valve to the exhaust? I disconnected it...but this mod looks like a better idea imho http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

I found one for a drip system that it is barbed to keep the hose on http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

I used a vacuum line cap, to connect the valve to the exhaust. I cut off the cap portion and got a 1 inch piece of tube.

Can I do this with my 2004 VR6???

No. R32, Audi TT, and B6 Audi S4 (and someone mentioned a 911 Porsche model
recently) are the only cars with this kind of exhaust valve.
That's a clever little fishtank valve there. I do sorta wonder
though if a plastic valve like that will really hold the vacuum
indefinitely. Its intended purpose is to regulate
air flow in a fish tank and it's not super critical if it
leaks a little bit as its job is usually to vary the flow
from "a little" to "a lot" rather than to shut it off completely.
The symptom of a leak would be that around town
the exhaust would gradually get quieter and quieter as air leaked from
the acutator across the valve into the vacuum resevoir (causing the
actuator to actuate), and when you went to open it up on the highway, it
would gradually get louder and louder as air leaked back through the
valve to the vacuum its now holding in the actuator.
To test if this is happening, just idle the car for several minutes
and see if the exhaust flapper closes over time.

Re: ([email protected])

Nah, go ahead and add it. I'd be honored.
However, I did wonder about how much force it would take to cause a leak in the valve, or how much pressure it could withstand. That being said, I very unscientifically closed the valve all the way, and blew on it with my mouth as hard as I could. No way, air was going through there. (Get your minds out of the gutter.) I can take a picture of the valve apart so you can see what the inside looks like, but from general inspection, when you screw in the valve, the threaded part of the valve screws into the opening and seals it off. Hey, for $1.19 this valve is pretty cool.

Great idea. I wonder how long the valve would last in that type of environment?

Re: Exhaust Mod - Fish Tank Valve (gtiness)

i went with the $.27 home brew tubing clamp theory. i can reach under the car and open it by feel quicker than the valve can be twisted shut. what's nice is the line passes through the clamp so it stays put. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif Way cool!
Hey what about this post from Daemon42?
Hope this copy works: http://forums.vwvortex.com/zer...78785
Couldn't the 'signal' or power wire to the plug be switched to allow an in car control? Seems like it could work. . .
